Ayer travels to Taiwan on behalf of region

WEYBRIDGE — State Sen. Claire Ayer has grown accustomed to traveling throughout the Green Mountain State in representing the interests of Addison County and Brandon.

But the four-term Democrat’s customary travels, usually from her home in Weybridge to the Statehouse in Montpelier, recently ramped up to some veritable globetrotting.

Ayer returned on Monday from a weeklong visit to Taiwan, as co-leader of a 10-person delegation made up of legislators from four New England states: Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.

United Way making headway in fund drive

Posted on December 13, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County has reached 60 percent of its $775,000 goal in its 2010-2011 fund drive, nicely ahead of last year’s pace as the campaign enters the critical holiday giving season, officials said on Thursday.

It was in September that local United Way launched its annual fund drive to aid the county’s many nonprofit human service agencies. Organizers set the same goal as last year — a threshold of $775,000 that the United Way fell $40,000 short of realizing for 2009, in large part due to the sluggish economy.

MONTPELIER — State and local officials on Thursday formally announced e-Corp English’s plans to grow in Middlebury and confirmed details of a state aid package that helped woo the English-language training company to Addison County’s shire town.

The company’s plans, first reported by the Addison Independent, call for an initial work force of 35 workers to locate next year in a vacant 6,700-square-foot space at 1197 Exchange St. Deborah Schwarz, founder and president of e-Corp English, hopes to expand that work force to more than 100 within the next three years.

MIDDLEBURY — Emily Blistein had spent most of her adult life as a student, lawyer and advocate for women in crisis.

But last month, at age 31, she decided to dramatically shift gears and pursue another one of her passions: Collecting well-made, vintage things and sharing them with the public.

A wide variety of those things — including caned rockers, glass ornaments and fragrant soaps — can be found in Blistein’s new store “Clementine,” located at 58 Main St. in Middlebury.

MIDDLEBURY — A surging company offering English instruction to corporate professionals throughout the world has picked Middlebury as the spot in which it will expand its operations and bring as many as 100 or more good paying jobs to the area by 2013.

The company, called e-Corporate English, provides intensive language training and coaching in-person, online and over the phone. It was launched in 2007 by Deborah Schwarz, an entrepreneur, foreign language expert, and past attendee of the Middlebury College Language School’s summer programs (in Russian and Chinese).

UD-3 OKs budget with $300K in spending cuts

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Voters in the Addison Central Supervisory Union’s seven towns will be asked on Town Meeting Day to support a 2011-2012 spending plan of $15,643,007, which represents a 2.03-percent decrease in spending compared to this year.

The decrease allows UD-3 — which includes the combined budgets of Middlebury Union Middle School and High School — to meet the state’s “Challenges for Change” directive.

Shoreham voters reject town office building options

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — A majority of Shoreham voters on Tuesday decided to take a pass on two different options for building new town offices, instead electing to do “none of the above.”

That decision volleys the town-office-expansion issue onto the desk of the selectboard, which will spend the coming months deciding whether to fashion a project more modest than the $556,000 and $1,070,000 plans, both of which failed to garner enough support on Tuesday.

'Night Fires' to be rekindled

MIDDLEBURY — Abigail Nessen Bengsen, 27, recalled with glee her long involvement with “Night Fires,” a winter solstice celebration in which since 1982 local performers had pierced the year’s darkest night with a creative cornucopia of music, dance, poems and stories from throughout the world.

“My family was involved before I was born,” Bengsen said. “I grew up in it.”

But Night Fires went dark in 2007 when its creator, Lincoln’s Marianne Lust, needed a break from the arduous tasks of staging what was then a traveling performance.

ADDISON, Vt./CROWN POINT, N.Y. — Contractors have completed most of the underwater sub-structure of the new Champlain Bridge and will work through the winter on some of the more visible elements of the new span that is slated to be finished by Oct. 9, 2011.

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) officials on Thursday provided their first substantial, on-location update on progress in building the new bridge, a $70 million project being undertaken by Colorado-based Flatiron Construction.
