Shumlin outlines health care plan

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin told Porter Medical Center officials on Tuesday to be patient in weathering what he believes will be a short-term financial storm en route to a new, single-payer health care system he said will bring long-term success and financial sustainability to the industry.

Hospital tax draws lawmakers' eyes

MIDDLEBURY — Local health care providers on Monday continued to warn lawmakers that their industry could soon be in critical condition if the state tries to balance its budget on the backs of hospitals and the medical community.

The subject of health care reform once again dominated discussion at the weekly Addison County Legislative Breakfast, held this week at the Middlebury Legion hall. Porter Hospital officials turned out in force to weigh in on state budget discussions and health care reform efforts under way in Montpelier.

College to sell former courthouse to tech incubator

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College will sell the former Addison County Courthouse at 5 Court St. to the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies. The organization, known as VCET, will use a portion of the building as a local headquarters to further its mission of helping entrepreneurs establish new high-tech businesses in the state.

Pig-kissing nets $6K for Platt Library

SHOREHAM — Shoreham Inn co-owners Molly and Dominic Francis were the big “winners” in a pig kissing contest that raised more than $6,000 for the town’s Platt Memorial Library.

The “Pig Kissin’” competition saw seven local celebrities vie for the dubious honor of kissing a piglet, aka Runty the Porker, at a public gathering last Saturday. Voters cast their ballots with dollar bills, with the largest sum sealing the victory with a kiss for Runty.

Shoreham youth back from epic sea voyage

SHOREHAM — It’s understandable if Shoreham’s Nick Balfour is having a tougher time than usual adjusting to the spate of cold, snowy weather in Vermont this winter.

That’s because only a short time ago, the 22-year-old was among a group of 27 college students sailing the balmy equatorial Pacific on a six-week-long scientific odyssey during which, among other things, they gained a better understanding of the effects of climate change on vital marine nutrients.

Human Services Agency moving to new building

MIDDLEBURY — A new 17,000-square-foot building in the Middlebury South Village (MSV) development off Court Street is on track to be finished by the end of March, at which time it will be occupied by the Vermont Agency of Human Services’ Addison County offices that are currently based at 700 Exchange St.

“Things have gone incredibly smoothly,” MSV managing owner Jeff Glassberg said of the project, which broke ground just last September.

“We are ahead of schedule.”

Mary Hogan School board OKs increased budget

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 13 will vote on a 2011-2012 Mary Hogan Elementary School spending plan of $5,899,867, which represents a 2.22-percent increase compared to this year.

It is a budget that maintains current staffing levels, does not add any new programs and recognizes an enrollment increase of 10 students (for a total of 400), according to Mary Hogan Elementary Co-Principal Tom Buzzell.

Rising state tax puts Porter in a bind

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Hospital’s ability to participate in Vermont’s health care reform effort could be severely hampered by state budget proposals that would further erode the Middlebury institution’s fragile bottom line.

That was the message on Tuesday from key Porter Hospital officials who face the perennial challenge of delivering cutting edge medical services to a population that is increasingly unable to afford them.

Lawmakers brace for many difficult budget decisions

BRISTOL — As if health care reform weren’t shaping up as a tough enough challenge, lawmakers this session will participate in crafting a 2011-2012 state budget that is already facing a $176 million revenue shortfall.

Local legislators outlined some of the many looming budget challenges at a legislative breakfast on Monday at the Bristol American Legion headquarters.

House and Senate members are poring over a fiscal year 2012 budget draft that features a lot of cuts and some revenue adjustments.

Rep. Clark recovering from heart attack

MONTPELIER — Rep. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes was recovering well on Wednesday from surgery just hours after suffering what his wife, Eileen, called a “major heart attack” at his hotel in Montpelier on Tuesday evening.

“He sounded like his old self today,” Eileen Clark said during a brief phone conversation on Wednesday as the Addison Independent went to press.
