MIDDLEBURY — Nancy Valko was tired of living in the prison that Lou Gehrig’s Disease had made of her once vibrant body.

So on a sunny April 19, 2009, the former Middlebury resident took one last wheelchair ride through her favorite park, had a piece of berry pie, bade farewell to her beloved friends and family, and went out into her backyard to draw her last breath.

Shoreham makes fund-raising goal for library project

Posted on March 7, 2011 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — Town meeting in Shoreham brought some kind tidings to boosters of the Platt Memorial Library.

In a rather spontaneous showing of generosity, townspeople at their annual gathering agreed to transfer $90,000 in Newton Academy fire insurance money to an expansion/renovation plan for the library that has set on the Shoreham green for more than 100 years.

That action, supported by voice vote, could allow for construction on the 1,600-square-foot addition to begin as soon as this fall, according to library trustees.

All local school spending plans endorsed

Posted on March 3, 2011 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — School directors’ efforts to level-fund or even reduce their 2011-2012 budget proposals paid dividends on Monday and Tuesday, as all education spending plans in the county were endorsed in town meeting voting.

That’s not to say there weren’t some tense moments in some towns. Bridport’s elementary school budget passed by a slim six votes.

But most of the school spending plans passed by comfortable margins, either by voice vote or Australian ballots (see town-by-town results).

Posted on March 3, 2011 |

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) executive committee will focus on hiring an interim superintendent rather than launch an immediate search for a full-time replacement for current superintendent Lee Sease.

That was the word on Monday from ACSU board chairwoman Carol Ford, who explained the hiring of an interim administrator will give school directors more time to map out the qualities they would like to see in the new superintendent.

ADDISON — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has agreed to give Flatiron Construction a 65-day schedule adjustment in which to complete the new Champlain Bridge in view of harsh winter weather and underwater debris that have hampered work progress.
