Governor not sold on pot legislation

VERGENNES — At Monday’s legislative breakfast in Vergennes, Gov. Phil Scott and one of his constituents discussed their opposing viewpoints on the possible legalization of small amounts of marijuana.

It appears the 2017 legislative session will wrap up without passage of a bill that would have allowed Vermont to legally possess up to one ounce of marijuana and up to two mature plants.

Porter Medical Center offers new services for chronically ill patients

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center is developing new educational and online services aimed at helping chronically ill patients stay out of the hospital and/or avoid serious surgeries.

The services include a wide range of free workshops and a website, all designed to help people adopt diets and exercise regimens to better live with — or avoid experiencing — persistent ailments such as diabetes, cancer, lupus, heart disease and asthma, or chronic pain caused by serious injury or medical conditions such as fibromyalgia.

Skiing champs teach skills to Alaska kids

MIDDLEBURY — Twelfth-graders Amelia Ingersoll and Ursula Volz are now expertly slaloming around the final gates in their respective academic careers at Middlebury Union High School.

But the pair of student-athletes recently took a week off to travel thousands of miles to become volunteer teachers of a sport they both love: Nordic skiing.

And their students were Native American children living at the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

Orwell to vote again on FHUHS budget

ORWELL — Orwell voters on May 9 will cast ballots on the same 2017-2018 Fair Haven Union High School spending proposal of $7,831,980 that they and other Addison Rutland Supervisory Union residents defeated by a combined 927-763 tally on Town Meeting Day.

And there will be even busier ballots in some of the other ARSU communities, which include Benson, Castleton, Fair Haven, Hubbardton, Orwell and West Haven.

Health care reform effort stalls in Statehouse

BRISTOL — Local lawmakers on Monday served notice that legislation aimed at creating publicly financed primary health care in Vermont will not advance until next year, at the earliest.

Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, explained there has not been the needed support from the administration of Gov. Phil Scott, now in his first term of office.

Middlebury farmers' market moves to VFW

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Farmers’ Market (MFM) will serve up its 43rd season beginning Saturday, May 6, at a brand new location with a growing crop of vendors offering a diverse menu of fresh veggies, cheeses, fruit, prepared foods and a whole lot more.

The new location is the Middlebury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7823 headquarters at 530 Exchange St., which offers a generous parking area on which vendors will set up their respective booths.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College alum Cam MacKugler knew he had a winner in his Seedsheet invention, a product that allows anyone, virtually anywhere, to grow their own food.

And while his tiny, three-year-old company has been selling product at a nice clip from its headquarters in Middlebury, MacKugler knew Seedsheet could do a lot better if fertilized with major capital.
