Briggs launches second try for Senate seat, calls for lower taxes

ADDISON — Addison Republican Peter Briggs is taking another run at the state Senate, where he hopes to rally support for growing the economy and decreasing taxes.

Briggs, a 27-year-old dairy farmer, is making his second consecutive bid for one of the two seats in the Vermont Senate representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore. He finished third in 2016 in a four-way race that saw re-election of incumbent state Sens. Claire Ayer of Addison and Christopher Bray of New Haven, both Democrats.

Retired ER physician chronicles adrenaline-filled career

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Paul Seward always wanted to become a pilot. But he ultimately settled into a long career as an emergency room physician, a vocation that provided him with as many thrills and as much of an adrenaline rush as any stunt pilot could ever experience.

Seward, a 75-year-old Middlebury resident, has captured many of those thrills — both the ups and the downs — in a non-fiction book titled “Patient Care: Death and Life in the Emergency Room.” The book will be available beginning July 3, at area bookshops and online.

Middlebury eyes 2020 tax holidays to help merchants during rail project

Porter programs help residents quit tobacco products

MIDDLEBURY — Randy Bigelow in 1981 began smoking fancy Turkish cigarettes to get into the good graces of a young woman who enjoyed the same brand. He would move on from that romantic interest and consequently her expensive brand of cigarettes. He switched to less costly Marlboros.

Cheaper, but equally deadly and addictive. Early this past winter, Bigelow was smoking between three and four packs of cigarettes per day. Health consequences aside, the nasty habit was costing him around $150 per week.

Longtime Middlebury assessor to step down

MIDDLEBURY — Point to a house on a map of Middlebury and town Assessor Bill Benton can probably tell you not only how much the structure is worth, but approximately when it was built. He’s gathered that kind of encyclopedic knowledge by being smart and passionate about a job he’s held for three decades.

Well, Middlebury is going to have to nurture another property valuation encyclopedia.

Middlebury plants seeds for downtown block party

MIDDLEBURY — In addition to supporting a local tax holiday during the peak of construction during the downtown rail bridge replacement (click here to read that story), the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday also backed a plan aimed at giving a bump to local merchants by bring more green downtown.

Middlebury raises town tax rate just a hair

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday approved a new municipal tax rate of 98.36 cents for fiscal year 2019, which begins on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2019.

The new rate represents a bump of 14-tenths of a penny compared to the current rate of 98.22 cents per $100 in property value.

Middlebury Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay is anticipating updated education property tax information from the state of Vermont as soon as June 30. That data will allow the selectboard to set an overall property tax rate for the community next month.

ACSD negotiates a better busing contract

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District has secured an $800,000 rebate in its new transportation contract, thanks to some deft negotiating by ACSD Business Manager Brittany Gilman and some concessions agreed to by the provider, Student Transportation of America/Bet-Cha Transit.

In his House bid, Birong seeks support for small businesses

VERGENNES — The table appears set for 3 Squares Café owner-operator Matt Birong of Vergennes to join the Vermont Legislature.

Barring a write-in campaign or a minor party candidate entering the race later this summer, Birong and incumbent Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, will run unopposed on Nov. 6 for Addison-3’s two Vermont House seats representing Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham.

It would be the first time ever that two Democrats held both seats in what has traditionally been a Republican stronghold.
