Sheriff, judges and prosecutor on county ballot

ADDISON COUNTY — There are rarely races here for the few elected posts in county government.

But this year is an exception.

Addison County voters on Tuesday, Nov. 6, will be asked to decide elections for sheriff, state’s attorney and assistant judge.

The impending retirement of Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler has generated a lot of interest in the position. Middlebury Democrat Peter Newton will face independent Kevin Gibbs of Bristol for the post.

Zuckerman eyes new term; talks taxes, marijuana and clean water

MIDDLEBURY — Lt. Gov. David Zuckerman is asking voters to give him another two years to advance a political agenda that includes a livable wage, a Vermont-branded milk industry that could help struggling dairy farmers, advances in high-speed Internet and cell phone coverage, and passage of a law to regulate and tax recreational marijuana in a way that would raise money for education and economic development advances.

Storm Cafe to close its doors

MIDDLEBURY — It’s a storm that many Addison County residents had hoped would rage on, unabated.

But unable to extend their lease in the historic Stone Mill building in Middlebury’s Frog Hollow, Storm Café owners John and Beth Hughes have decided to end the restaurant’s 25-year run after the last meal clears the kitchen on Nov. 11.

“It’s really hard,” John Hughes said during a recent interview. “If I could stay in this location, I wouldn’t be done.”

Search is on for new Porter Medical Center CEO

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center (PMC) on Monday officially launched its search for a new CEO to replace Dr. Fred Kniffin, who will be vacating the post next spring to resume more fully his duties as an Emergency Department physician.

Orwell to vote again on school district merger

ORWELL — Orwell residents will have an extra reason to go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

In addition to voting in federal, statewide and county elections, residents will be asked to weigh in yet again on whether Orwell should join five nearby Rutland County towns as part of the Slate Valley Modified Unified Union School District (SVMUUSD).

Middlebury Planning Commission picks site for passenger rail platform

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Planning Commission has unanimously backed a plan to build a new passenger rail platform in between Middle Seymour and Maple Streets. The plan calls for the platform to be placed on opposite side of the tracks from the former Middlebury train station, fronting Maple Street.

ACSD seeks input on buildings' future

MIDDLEBURY — An Addison Central School District board subcommittee wants to hear how local residents would like to prioritize the use of and repairs to the ACSD’s school buildings and other physical assets into the next decade and beyond.

It’s all part of officials’ efforts to create a facilities master plan to better manage the ACSD’s 12 buildings according to the district’s educational priorities as student enrollment continues to decline statewide.

$1.2M water tank in Shoreham replacing 1960s original

SHOREHAM — Addison, Bridport and Shoreham residents will be sipping from a new, jumbo water jug in around three weeks.

And when we say “jumbo,” we mean 769,000 gallons.

That’s the capacity of the new concrete water holding tank being installed by the Tri-Town Water District on an easement near the Douglas Orchard off Route 74 in Shoreham.

Many local women live in daily fear of domestic violence

MIDDLEBURY — “Rose,” an Addison County woman in her 40s, is overcome with dread every time she looks at the calendar.

While life is pretty good right now, each passing day brings her closer to the moment her ex-husband will be released from jail.

Closer to the prospect of being potentially shaken to the core in the dead of night by the terrifying sounds of a pounding fist and bellowing voice at her front door.

Closer to constantly looking over her shoulder for the man she’s been trying to escape from for around two years.
