Lawmakers prepare for showdown on $38 million in budget cuts

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County lawmakers and their colleagues will spend the next several days studying a list of $38 million in potential savings in state government intended to help shore up a $150 million hole in the fiscal year 2011 general state budget.

'Big Dig,' Midd-style: Bridge-related road work starts April 5

MIDDLEBURY — Construction on the Cross Street Bridge project will begin to spill into the center of downtown Middlebury beginning on Monday, April 5, when road and utilities work will kick into overdrive and create some slower going for traffic in some locations through the early fall.

Work on the $16 million project has, until now, been largely confined to sections of Cross Street and Bakery Lane near the Otter Creek, where the enormous span is taking shape.

Bridge School marks 30th birthday, transition

MIDDLEBURY — Richard Nessen still vividly recalls the day that he, his wife Kathy, and friends Gerry and Bobbi Loney decided to put into motion what had been a dream of starting a school.

“We had had a notion of starting a school together since the 1970s and one night, we just said ‘We’re going to do it.’ We gave notice at our jobs,” he said. “It was kind of like stepping off a cliff.”

Doria's Restaurant to leave Middlebury location

MIDDLEBURY — Doria’s Restaurant will be shutting its doors for good following close of business on Saturday, April 17, after a two-year run in the Battell Block on Middlebury’s Merchants Row.

Meanwhile, four separate parties have contacted Battell LLC, owners of the building, expressing interest in establishing a new enterprise in the high-profile downtown space.

School officials mull changes in Addison Central governance

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) board members will spend the coming weeks digesting various school district consolidation options offered up in a massive report that could lead to sweeping changes in how schools in the seven-town district are governed and managed.

It was last fall that the ACSU commissioned former Barre Superintendent Ray Proulx to study resources, enrollment trends and possible collaborations among schools within the ACSU’s seven elementary schools, middle school and high school.

BRISTOL — Four area American Legion posts rolled out the red carpet on Friday for a rare visit from their highest-ranking colleague, National Commander Clarence E. Hill, who was touring the western part of the state to listen to veterans and describe efforts being made on their behalf in the nation’s capital.

Bridport voters eye new, reduced budget

MIDDLEBURY — Bridport residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 4, to cast votes on a proposed 2010-2011 elementary school budget that is $6,158 leaner than the spending plan that was defeated by less than 10 votes on Town Meeting Day.

Voters rejected the original budget plan of $1,336,975 by a 179-172 tally. It proved to be one of the few school budget defeats in the state but was the second year in a row that Bridport residents had rejected their elementary school spending plan.

Report outlines ACSU merger options (with full report)

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) could potentially run its schools more efficiently and cost-effectively by consolidating the governance of its nine schools and by merging some of its smaller elementary school districts.

Those were some of the findings in a 101-page school governance study unveiled by ACSU officials this week. The ACSU board last year commissioned retired Barre schools superintendent Raymond Proulx to perform the study as a first step in determining what, if any changes should be made to streamline operations within the union.

Middlebury to review utility rates

Brighter Planet ready to relocate

MIDDLEBURY — Brighter Planet, a Middlebury company dedicated to providing consumers with practical solutions to fighting climate change, will be reducing its organizational footprint in Middlebury as it looks for better ways of helping people worldwide reduce their own respective carbon footprints.

Rob Adler, Brighter Planet’s director of business development and strategic partnerships, confirmed the environmental organization is slightly downsizing its workforce and shifting its headquarters from Middlebury to San Francisco.
