Tax increase possible in Middlebury with ACSU plan

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union board on Oct. 16 will consider a major change in how it assigns special education and central office expenses to the eight districts within the union, a change that would likely result in a property tax increase for Middlebury residents.

Cornwall appeals to Shumlin on pipeline

CORNWALL — The Cornwall selectboard has asked the Shumlin Administration to oppose the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., and instead work with VGS on a financing plan to plot a pipeline route directly from Middlebury south to Rutland.

Selectboard: Delay in Middlebury town office vote would add $353K to price

MIDDLEBURY — Delaying until next March a vote on new Middlebury municipal offices and a new recreation center could add $353,000 more to the project price tag than if the matter were decided this December, according to new information unveiled on Tuesday by members of a panel charged with mapping out the proposal.

Lightning Photo to close its doors after decades in business

MIDDLEBURY — It was in 1972 that David Werle focused on transforming his enthusiasm for photography into a new business — Middlebury Darkroom at 64 Main St. He and his family followed that up in 1983 with the opening of Lightning Photo in The Centre shopping plaza, a business that would move to 111 Court St. in 2002.

First drafts of Middlebury town offices, rec center are floated

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury committee that is planning for a new municipal building and recreation center got its first look last week at some conceptual designs of how those structures might be massed.

It was on Oct. 1 that the Town Offices and Recreation Center Steering Committee got a chance to review the preliminary building sketches, prepared by Bread Loaf Corp. Current plans call for the new town offices to be built in place of the current Osborne House at 77 Main St., while the recreation center would be erected on school lands off Mary Hogan Drive.

Vt. Gas launches 'Phase II' of its planned Addison County pipeline

ADDISON COUNTY — As Vermont Gas Systems on Thursday formally announced plans to advance its proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y., officials in the two towns principally affected by the project readied for potentially rancorous talks with the gas company.

New cider facility going up quickly

MIDDLEBURY — Construction has hit a fever pitch on Vermont Hard Cider’s new, 100,000-square-foot headquarters off Middlebury’s Exchange Street, leaving company officials confident the new facility — to feature new office, manufacturing and warehouse space along with a visitors’ center — will be completed as scheduled by next spring or early summer.

“The work has been steady; there have been no real setbacks,” said Nate Formalarie, spokesman for Vermont Hard Cider (VHC).

ACSU to try out joint board meeting concept on Oct. 16

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union on Oct. 16 will debut a new meeting schedule that will unite all seven of the district’s elementary boards for a single monthly gathering, rather than the multiple meetings school officials and ACSU Superintendent Peter Burrows now have to attend each month.

ID-4 school board seeks anwers on town's rec facility plans
