By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — An unusually wet, hot and humid summer has been miserable for humans but a veritable utopia for mosquitoes, which have been multiplying in vast numbers in many areas of Addison County.

“They have been very abundant, because of the rain.”

LEICESTER — Faced with the relentless encroachment of milfoil and unpredictable financial assistance from the state to battle that problem, the Lake Dunmore/Fern Lake Association (LDFLA) is seeking to raise at least $1.725 million to permanently endow the ongoing effort to clear nuisance aquatic weeds from the two bodies of water.

“This would provide the nucleus of a successful program today, and into the future,” LDFLA Treasurer Jay Michael said on Monday of that new campaign, called “Lakes Alive — Now and Forever.”

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously agreed to apply for almost $160,000 in state grants to build the first two 600-foot segments of a bike and pedestrian pathway on Exchange Street.

Officials are seeking money for the first 1,200 feet of pathway, extending from the Exchange Street/Elm Street intersection to the driveway of MacIntyre Services.
