Bank offers Printer's Alley property to Middlebury

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday agreed to consider an offer by the National Bank of Middlebury to convey to the town (at no charge) Printer’s Alley.

That alley connects Main Street to the Marble Works complex. It has come into sharper focus in recent months because of its proximity to the ongoing downtown rail bridges project. Printer’s Alley was closed to one-way vehicle traffic this past spring when a temporary bridge was installed on Main Street. The alley has remained open to pedestrian traffic.

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s easy to assume the typical homeless person is unemployed and therefore unable to afford a roof and four walls.

SHOREHAM — Two decades ago, Ray Gauthier and his family were in the market for a Christmas tree. They had plenty of options, but elected to visit the Red Sled Christmas Tree Farm on Route 74 West in Shoreham.

“My in-laws lived in Shoreham, right next to the Shoreham Inn,” Gauthier recalled. “We decided to try (Red Sled) out.”

So they did. Again and again.

VERGENNES — At just three weeks old, tiny Hunter holds the distinction of being the youngest resident of the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes.

He doesn’t realize he and his 28-year-old mom, Sammie, don’t have a home of their own.

But Sammie plans to change all that, and she’s getting a big lift from John Graham Housing & Services (JGHS), the nonprofit that runs the Vergennes shelter and five multi-unit apartment buildings in the county.

Fixed costs affecting Middlebury town budget

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is beginning its review of a draft fiscal year 2019 municipal budget that, if left unchanged, would add 2.16 cents to the current local tax rate of 98.2 cents.

But it’s a spending plan that could look different when it’s put before Middlebury voters on Town Meeting Day in March, as selectboard members could recommend both subtractions and additions before agreeing to a final budget proposal by Jan. 23, when it is expected to be finalized.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters next fall could be asked to approve a bond issue of more than $1 million to replace a deteriorating water main that serves several of the community’s largest water users in the community’s industrial park.

At issue is an 8-inch ductile iron water main pipe that feeds multiple connections off Exchange Street, including the Agri-Mark/Cabot cheese plant, Vermont Hard Cider, Otter Creek Brewing and the many health care providers within Catamount Park.
