Group seeks to instill resiliency skills in local children

MIDDLEBURY — Feeling like you don’t belong, that no one cares.

Keeping a major problem private, to the extent that it devours you from the inside out.

These are some classic symptoms in an increasing number of Addison County children who are hurting and aren’t asking for help, according to local human services providers.

Left unchecked, these symptoms can lead to depression and descent into risky behavior — like drug addiction and self-harm, advocates noted.

Bee's Wrap seals deal on new Middlebury digs

MIDDLEBURY — It’s as busy as a beehive in the former Middlebury Sears Hometown Store at 383 Exchange St.

The 10,000-square-foot space, vacated by Sears this past July, is now hosting the production, shipping and warehouse functions of “Bee’s Wrap,” a fast-growing manufacturer of an all-natural alternative to plastic wrap that’s made Bristol its home for the past four years.

Brian Carpenter, owner of 383 Exchange St., confirmed the Bee’s Wrap tenancy late last week.

Middlebury narrows down rail platform sites

MIDDLEBURY — A vast majority of Middlebury residents who’ve weighed in on the siting of a proposed passenger rail platform would prefer to see it placed in one of four areas: the Middle Seymour Street area, in the vicinity of the Marble Works, the former train station building and behind the parking lot of the National Bank of Middlebury on Seymour Street.

That opinion came through loud and clear in a recent survey conducted by the town of Middlebury and its engineering firm, Vanesse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB).

Champlain Valley Equipment to build new repair building

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Development Review Board on Sept. 24 unanimously endorsed Champlain Valley Equipment’s (CVE) plan to build a new, 4,500-square-foot maintenance building on its property at 453 Exchange St. 

The new building will give CVE technicians a safer and roomier location in which to service the company’s largest agricultural and construction vehicles.

United Way launches $660K fund drive

ADDISON COUNTY — The United Way of Addison County on Sept. 21 officially launched its 2018 fund drive with a new goal, under new leadership.

UWAC officials have set a target of $660,000 for this year’s fund drive, which is $10,000 more than last year’s goal of $650,000 and the first time in several years the organization has set a higher financial target than the previous year. Money raised will help a variety of Addison County nonprofits providing such services as childcare, food and mental health counseling to area residents in need.

Porter affiliation with UVM network yields gains

MIDDLEBURY — Approximately a year and a half into its affiliation with the University of Vermont Health Network, Porter Medical Center is reaping the promised rewards of a more stable budget, more streamlined operations, shared resources, and improved technology.

And within the next three or four years, the partnership is expected to yield some major new amenities for PMC, including a state-of-the art electronic medical records system, a new medical office building and a more modern transportation system for critically ill patients.

Free summer lunches in jeopardy in some towns
