Monkton Republican Valerie Mullin hopes to join Baser in House

MONKTON — Monkton Republican Valerie Mullin in 2014 got her first taste of running for office, and she’s coming back this year for a second helping.

Only this time, she’s hoping to flip the script at the polls.

Mullin was one of four candidates who vied for the two Addison-4 House seats representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro. While she finished out of the running, she garnered a very respectable 1,514 votes from residents of the four towns.

Lincoln Democrat Mari Cordes touts health care experience in run for House

LINCOLN — Mari Cordes has helped heal a lot of patients during her many years as a Registered Nurse.

The Lincoln Democrat is now writing a recovery plan for the state of Vermont that she hopes to administer as a member of the House of Representatives.

Cordes, 57, confirmed last week that she will run for one of the seats in the Vermont House representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro. She joins a growing field of candidates in the Addison-4 district.

Wastewater disposal rules spur controversy

MIDDLEBURY — Lawmakers and local residents discussed wastewater disposal regulations during the April 11 Legislative Breakfast at the American Legion Hall in Middlebury.

Addison farmer Paul Boivin said he believes a double standard exists between the country and urban areas, when it comes to wastewater disposal systems. He said folks in rural areas with inhospitable soils have to spend $40,000 to $60,000 for a mound system.

“You can’t do anything with any lot unless you have a working septic system,” he pointed out.

Charter House needs help feeding and housing our neighbors

MIDDLEBURY — The Charter House Coalition could use a few more cogs to power its formidable engine that delivers food, clothing and shelter to Middlebury-area folks in need of a boost.

Established in 2005, the coalition is a nonprofit association of local religious groups and individuals who each year donate hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of dollars to make sure the less fortunate in our midst have access to the basic necessities.

Orwell vote stops unification in Addison-Rutland district

ORWELL — Orwell residents on Tuesday voted 211 to 121 against joining five Rutland County communities in forming a “Slate Valley Unified Union School District” that would have been governed by a single board presiding over a global education budget for all of the schools in the new union.

“A pretty strong message was sent,” Orwell’s Alyson Eastman, chairwoman of the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union’s Act 46 Study Committee, said on Wednesday of her community’s vote on the issue.

Rail bridges' impact leads to talk of lawsuit

MIDDLEBURY — A group of downtown Middlebury property owners has given municipal and state transportation officials until the end of this month to produce more environmental and safety-related information about the upcoming replacement of the Main Street and Merchants Row railroad bridges, or they will take legal action.

That request is contained in an April 11 letter from local attorney Peter Langrock to the Middlebury selectboard.
