Two freight train cars derail in Middlebury; no injuries or spills

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Railway officials are pointing to “metal fatigue” in a track switch as the cause of the derailment of two freight train cars — one of them containing limestone, the other one empty — on tracks off Seymour Street in Middlebury at around 10 a.m. in Tuesday, July 2.

Mary Johnson taps Dave Mandel to be its next leader

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Johnson Children’s Center has hired Dave Mandel as its new executive director. The resident of Connecticut and New York City will succeed Barbara Saunders, who is retiring after more than 30 years of service to the Middlebury childcare center.

Mandel will assume the leadership role on July 8.

New owners take over Bud's Beans

MIDDLEBURY — Leah Keller and Brian Carter are always on the lookout for a good cup of coffee.

They found one so good, they bought the company.

It’s called Bud’s Beans, established in 2000 by Middlebury’s William “Bud” Smith. Smith grew the tiny enterprise in his own home and successfully courted a group of local stores to carry and sell what are seven varieties of expertly roasted beans.

Smith decided to sell the business in 2017, and he found two very willing buyers.

Rotary lauds Mickey Heinecken for his Habitat work

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Rotary Club recently awarded a combined total of $44,500 in grants to local charitable causes and paid its highest tribute to former Middlebury College football Coach Michael G. “Mickey” Heinecken for his contributions to Habitat for Humanity of Addison County.

Ilsley Library takes its services on the road

MIDDLEBURY — Realizing some folks can’t pay regular visits to Middlebury’s  Ilsley Public Library, officials there are working on ways to bring the institution’s books, videos and other services to the masses.

Efforts to create a more mobile Ilsley Library began this past Wednesday, June 19, at the Middlebury Farmers Market at the VFW Post 7823 at 530 Exchange Street. There, Ilsley Library Director Dana Hart staffed a booth offering dozens of books and library cards to market shoppers.

Locals lead search for Lake Seneca shipwrecks

FERRISBURGH — Addison County researchers are leading a two-week effort to map the bottom of Seneca Lake in New York State, a project that could uncover dozens of shipwrecks and re-write the history of the lake as a 19th-century commercial waterway.

Middlebury narrows its downtown master plan search

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials have selected three finalists to vie for a contract to design a master plan for downtown Middlebury, a document that will shape the shire town’s village for the next 20 years.

This master planning process comes at a critical time in Middlebury’s history. Work will begin in earnest this spring on a $72 million project to replace the Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges with a concrete tunnel.

Clippings: Pint-sized pup is a fun challenge

Question: What’s cuter than cute, is as big as a size-12 shoe, is covered with fur and commands constant attention?

Answer: A miniature golden doodle puppy named “Roxie,” who for the past two weeks has put bags under our eyes big enough to pack for a vacation.

Local 8-year-old artist earns statewide honor

MIDDLEBURY — Eight-year-old Daisy Madden was drawing before she could walk. Her mom, Meg, has marveled at the way she can pick up a crayon or marker and spontaneously draw whatever comes to mind.
