Grant allows Middlebury to create a downtown plan

Game store owner shares his dream for the former Ben Franklin

MIDDLEBURY — Scott Gemignani is in the business of magic and fantasy; his downtown Middlebury game store, Tinker & Smithy, sells it by the box.

But some might say the latest trick up his sleeve could compete with anything that could be scripted in DungeonQuest, Battlelore, or War of the Ring.

He’s attempting to conjure the purchase of the former Ben Franklin store property at 63 Main St. and transform it into a mixture of retail, arcade, bowling alley, burger joint and affordable housing.

Weybridge teen offers glimpse into Muslim community's concerns

MIDDLEBURY — Narges Anzali speaks and writes so clearly, beautifully and effortlessly, you have to remind yourself she’s only 13.

But living in a world where one can face taunts, jeers or much worse for simply being Muslim, Anzali has had to grow up more quickly than other teens at Middlebury Union Middle School. She’s fluent in three languages and her voluminous English vocabulary includes words like “Islamophobia.”

Pop-up venue opens for business Saturday in former Clay's

MIDDLEBURY — The former Clay’s women’s clothing retail space at 60 Main St. in downtown Middlebury will begin its temporary run as a new pop-up events space called “Bundle,” which this weekend will debut with two sewing sessions at which participants will craft reusable bags.

Building plan for historic Stone Mill ready for review

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Development Review Board on April 8 will begin its review of a proposal to renovate the historic Stone Mill building at 3 Mill St. for a combination of retail, restaurant, office and housing purposes.

Community Barn Ventures (CBV) submitted an application calling for substantial interior improvements to the prominent, circa-1840 structure bordering the Otter Creek in Middlebury’s Frog Hollow district. CBV, co-owned by Stacey Rainey and Mary Cullinane, recently agreed to buy the Stone Mill from Middlebury College for $500,000.

Lawmakers offer lifeline to Salisbury fish hatchery

SALISBURY — Budget builders in the Vermont House have agreed to a funding plan that would grant the Salisbury Fish Culture Station a reprieve until at least 2022. The plan also includes money to study and possibly improve the hatchery’s water discharge system, which could further extend the life of a facility that needs to comply with new federal environmental standards in order to continue operations.

Local Methodists advocate for more inclusivity in church

MIDDLEBURY — Many Addison County followers of the United Methodist Church are praying for their denomination’s Judicial Council to reject provisions of a recently adopted “Traditional Plan” for the worldwide organization. The new plan maintains the church’s ban on the ordination and marriage of Methodists whose sexual orientation and/or gender identity is outside the traditional heterosexual male/female model.

Town Hall Theater to repair the former Diner for new uses

MIDDLEBURY — The former Diner restaurant at 66 Merchants Row in Middlebury is being sized up for repairs and will be available for short-term rental and/or Town Hall Theater functions as soon as this summer.

Mark Bradley, executive director of THT, shared the news during a tour of the former eatery space, perhaps best known during its lengthy run as Steve’s Park Diner. Town Hall Theater officials announced the purchase of the property, for $300,000, last April.

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Laura Weylman and Family Nurse Practitioner Ania Mortier have a lot in common. They both are passionate about running and staying fit. They’re unabashed dog lovers. And they’ve long shared the same healthcare philosophy that patients should be treated like family and be seen when healthy as well as when sick.

Now they have another thing in common: Green Mountain Primary Care, a new Middlebury practice at 102A Court St. It’s a joint venture finally coming to fruition after a decade of wishful thinking.
