Ways of seeing: A flag that symbolizes racial hatred

Posted on June 14, 2018 |

Colwell, Joanna ONLINE.jpg

A pick up truck drives around Middlebury, with giant Confederate flags flapping in the wind. A house on Schoolhouse Road displays the same flag. A young person in a local parade sports one on his shirt. Belt buckles that say “100% Rebel” with stars and bars in the background, sit on the shelf at a farm supply store. Imagine for a moment that these flags display swastikas. What would go through your mind when you saw them? Would you feel anger or fear? Would you want to rip these flags to shreds, and then burn them into ashes?

Ways of Seeing: Women's rights are human rights

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

It is almost two years since I agreed, with some trepidation, to join the WomenSafe board of directors. I was nervous about joining a board because I had never served on one before, and I wasn’t sure if I had the right skills to be useful. I pretty much suck at technology beyond answering my email, and my financial literacy might be even worse. To be honest, I was surprised they even asked me! But I have found my time helping to steer this organization, which has worked since 1980 to help countless survivors in our community, to be precious beyond measure.

Ways of Seeing: An important freedom — from fear

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

Colwell, Joanna ONLINE.jpg

“Everyone Deserves to be Safe.” This is what my sign said the first time we held a vigil in Middlebury to draw awareness to police brutality in America.

Just imagine if you saw a tiny baby, crying on the ground. You wouldn’t have to think about what to do, would you? You would run to that baby, pick them up and cradle them. You would do everything in your power to keep that baby safe from harm.

Letter to the editor: Fuentes-George is energetic, courageous and smart

Posted on March 1, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

I hope Middlebury voters will join me in voting for Lindsey Fuentes-George for Middlebury selectboard.

As the national political scene seems to go from bad to worse, I take heart in the wave of grassroots, local, first-time candidates who are determined to serve their communities with integrity and compassion.

Lindsey is a mother of three, so you know she can handle multitasking, prioritizing, and making money stretch, in the service of a family-friendly Middlebury.

Note of appreciation: Stonecutter boosts WomenSafe

Posted on February 26, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

The board members of WomenSafe would like to express our deep gratitude to Stonecutter Spirits for their amazing generosity in donating the proceeds of their Galantines event last week. This fabulous party, which included cocktails, delicious food, hairstyling, pop up craft booths and more, was the brainchild of Stonecutter’s Sas Stewart and Martha Mack. We are moved and awed by their creativity and goodwill, as well as by the outpouring of generosity from everyone who made the event possible. So many local businesses donated their time, talents, and creations!

Ways of Seeing: Flag and mural are reminders of justice

Posted on February 15, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

Valentine’s Day falls smack in the middle Black History Month, and the state of Vermont started things off right with a historic raising of the Black Lives Matter flag at Montpelier High School. Although the student body of Montpelier High is only five percent Black, the school board voted unanimously to support the student-led Racial Justice Alliance in their efforts to increase racial awareness at the mostly white school.

Joanna Colwell: There's no racial justice in tax bill

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Joanna Colwell

Walking in Middlebury today, I started wondering about how the Republican tax bill would affect my life. How much will our health care premiums go up? Will our self-employed family even be able to afford insurance? How are we going to pay for college? I feel worried about the future, and at the same time I am aware that every one of these challenges is way more difficult if you are a Black person in America.

Ways of Seeing, Joanna Colwell: How do we keep from getting numb?

There are about 10 days between when I send in my “Ways of Seeing” column and when it runs in the paper. So when I type the words “Americans are reeling from yet another gun massacre” I do so with no confidence that by the time you read this, there won’t have been another, even more recent, shooting spree.

Ways of Seeing, Joanna Colwell: Let's work to make laws just for all

Last weekend I joined a whole lot of Middlebury people outside the college art museum, where we were treated to the amazing sight of dancers suspended on ropes, dancing on the vertical wall. The dance troupe, Bandaloop, combines the skills of rock climbing and dance, and creates performances on skyscrapers, bridges, natural cliffs, and historic sites all over the world.

Ways of Seeing, Joanna Colwell: We must refuse to ignore injustice

Posted on August 3, 2017 |
By Joanna Colwell

Last week in Minneapolis a police officer killed a forty-year-old white lady named Justine Damond. She was a soon-to-be married meditation teacher from Australia, who called the police because she thought she heard an assault taking place behind her house. There are many unanswered questions, and because neither police officer had their body cameras activated, we will probably never know exactly what happened. One thing is definitely true, though. Instead of the wedding that was planned for August, there will be a funeral.
