Guest Editorial: Recent history should dissuade entry into Syria

Posted on June 25, 2012 |
By Haviland Smith

It is a simple fact that many “countries” in the Middle East are not really nation-states as they are understood to be in the West, but rather often unhappy agglomerations of ethnic, tribal, sectarian and even national groups having little in common.

Instability in the Middle East can be measured by the extent of tribal, sectarian, ethnic and national frictions in any “country” in the region.

Guest Editorial: Attacking Iran is a bad bet

Posted on January 19, 2012 |
By Haviland Smith

It’s difficult not to notice that there is a growing crescendo here at home which appears to be encouraging the United States to attack Iran.

Backers of this campaign, at least until recently, have been limited to the Neoconservatives who would like us to invade everywhere and who got us into the Iraq invasion, parts of the Israeli government, and those American supporters of Israel who never question anything the Israelis do.

Guest editorial: Will England's move to nationalism erode EU's decades-old unity?

Posted on December 15, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

Last Friday, at the European Summit meeting in Brussels, British Conservative Party Prime Minister David Cameron refused to unconditionally guarantee a Eurozone “Stability Union” designed to mitigate the ongoing economic crisis in Europe, saying that British opposition was the right decision for England and has helped protect her economic interests.

Guest editorial: Will it be chaos or repression?

Posted on October 3, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

Clearly, Libya is stumbling to a final conclusion. We have, rightly or wrongly, played some role in the outcome. We have been involved in air support of the rebel troops on the ground and there are rumors that we have been involved in an advisory capacity as well.

But the extent of our involvement doesn’t really matter. What really matters is what is to come in Libya and the extent to which we as a nation believe that we should have a say in that outcome.

Editorial: Paranoia of terrorism causes U.S. to spend needless billions

In retrospect, It would be fascinating, and probably terrifying, to know even roughly what amount of money and resources it took for this country to prepare for the tenth anniversary of 9/11

Unfortunately, although there has been vast media coverage of the massive security measures undertaken for 9/11, no one seems to be looking at it in terms of the extent of vulnerability in which these knee-jerk measures leave the nation and the further economic drain that they place on our economy.

Dear Pres: Take off the gloves

Posted on April 18, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

Many American independents voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because they thought he was the smartest Democrat available. They put him in office. Given what we were facing in the aftermath of the incredibly profligate and counterproductive Bush presidency, smarts were what were needed.

Many voters figured he was smart enough to successfully lead the Democrats against what was bound to be a single-minded, ruthless Republican onslaught intent on retaking power in Washington.

Guest editorial: Stumbling in the ruins

In his 1993 article in Foreign Policy titled “The Clash of Civilizations?” Samuel Huntington posits that “in the future ... countries with large numbers of people of different civilizations ... are candidates for dismemberment.” In this context, “civilizations” are defined by language, history, religion, customs and institutions.

Guest Editorial: What it will take to win the war in Afghanistan

Posted on August 16, 2010 |
By Haviland Smith

David Kilcullen, one of the world’s leading counterinsurgency experts and preeminent advisor to the US government, says that we must meet certain markers if we are to “succeed” in Afghanistan: We must face the realities of historical and contemporary Afghanistan. There must be agreement between Afghans and Americans on our goals. We must eliminate the Taliban sanctuary in Pakistan. There must be a solid, long-term US commitment including a flexible timeline.

Guest Editorial: On courting Muslim moderates

Posted on June 14, 2010 |
By Haviland Smith

In late March, a little noticed, almost unreported event took place in the Middle East. The government of Qatar forced out the moderate leadership of one of Islam’s most popular, moderate websites and is reshaping it into a religiously more conservative media outlet. They have started by running news releases instead of the moderate and diverse content that the site, IslamOnline, was known for.

In the air — safety vs. freedom

Posted on January 18, 2010 |
By Haviland Smith

All it takes to get America ginned up about terrorism and air travel security is to have another attempt to down a jetliner hit the press. Detroit has done just that. Suggestions for solutions to this problem cover the range from idiotic to inspired. One genius on CNN suggested we ban anyone with an Arabic name from flying at all. One rather thoughtful expert suggested that there are a number of devices available that are capable of sniffing out explosive compounds.
