Between the Lines: Late spring brings a quieter time

Posted on June 10, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

Even amid the rumbling of road construction in downtown Middlebury, you can hear the sound of their absence. The sound that isn’t a sound.

It’s the time of year when for just a couple quiet weeks, Middlebury gets fully handed back to the people who live here. The decibel level drops by double digits, the pace slows to that of a true small town, and suddenly all the faces you see are familiar ones.

Between the Lines: Dubious advice to new college grads

Posted on May 27, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

Because so many people have asked me for a copy of the remarks I made at Sunday’s Middlebury College commencement, I’ve decided to reprint them here.

In case you hadn’t seen the news reports, I was asked to step in at the last minute for Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn, the scheduled commencement speakers who were last-minute no-shows. Apparently they had a Third World country to save that day and decided, for some inexplicable reason, that this was more important than giving a commencement speech.

Between the Lines: Beer and gardening don't mix

Posted on May 13, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

File this one under “How Not to Introduce Yourself to the Community,” or “What Happens When an Outtatown Owner Takes Over.”

For several years, enterprising gardeners around Middlebury sought a site for a community garden. Otter Creek Brewery rode to the rescue last year, generously providing open land behind the brewery on Exchange Street for two or three dozen garden sites.

Between the Lines: Bubble to bubble, from DC to Vt.

Posted on April 29, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

The plan was to get out of Dodge for a few days, escape the Vermont bubble — where all is beautiful and quiet and friendly — and see how the rest of the world lives.

He was headed to Washington, D.C., to visit friends and escape Mud Season.

He always found it fun to see who’s on the plane during flights between Washington and Burlington.

Again this time, he wasn’t disappointed. Waiting for his US Airways flight to board, he saw Sen. Patrick Leahy disembarking from the jetway.

Between the Lines: Candidates scramble to take lead

Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon,
Going to the candidates’ debate.
Laugh about it, shout about it,
When you’ve got to choose
Every way you look at it, you lose.

Between the Lines: How it sugars off in Starksboro

Posted on April 1, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

You’re in for a muddy ride this time of year, if you turn up onto Big Hollow Road off Route 116 in Starksboro.

There’s a short stretch of pavement as the road climbs steeply out of the valley. But it’s all dirt from there.

As on so many of Vermont’s less traveled roads, a surprising number of people live back in the hollow.

Just about when you think the settlements will give way to untouched forests, you arrive at the optimistically named Hillsboro Manor mobile home park.

Between the Lines: In spring, a skier turns to grumbling

Posted on March 18, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

There are four Canada geese on the opposite side of Otter Creek as I write this, standing on the tiny frozen edge of what was once an enormous sheet of ice. They look fat and proud of themselves, having weathered another winter and made it home to Vermont.

I’d like to report that these happy harbingers of spring have brightened my day, as they so optimistically survey their warming domain and search for nesting sites.

But I can also peer out the window and, in addition to the geese, see my snowboard lying forlornly on the deck in the 50-degree sunshine.

Between the Lines: Town meeting? Let's talk about underwear

Posted on March 4, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

You gotta love Town Meeting.

Even if 90 percent of the discussion is about budget numbers that are as dry as a speech by Gov. James Douglas, there’s a certain Kabuki-like quality to the charmingly ornate process of gathering to discuss the town’s business.

And speaking of Gov. Douglas, he was again absent from his role as moderator, out of Vermont on state business. He’s now missed one-third of the town meetings going back to 2005, but Douglas ran again this year for the town moderator spot. It’s apparently the one office to which he knows he can still get re-elected.

Between the Lines: Making lemonade on the Lemon Fair

Posted on February 11, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

When life gives you lemons, the saying goes, make lemonade.

So it is that on a Sunday afternoon, instead of returning from cross-country at Rikert or snowboarding at Sugarbush, we are heading west into the sunset — to go ice skating.

The torrential rain that washed away most of winter’s snow has had one huge benefit: It flooded hayfields all over Addison County. That, combined with two weeks of frigid temperatures, created ice where once there was only snow and grassy stubble.

Between the Lines

Posted on January 28, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

“You can observe a lot just by watching,” Yogi Berra said.

So, too, can you learn a lot just by getting off the chairlift.

You can learn, for example, that an athletic 12-year-old girl, who has just made her first run on a snowboard down the Snow Bowl’s Allen trail, is nonetheless susceptible to falling as she gets off the lift.

That when she falls, it’s likely to be on her back. And that she’s probably going to reach her arms behind her to break her fall.

Which vastly increases the odds that like so many boarders before her, she will sprain her wrist as she topples backwards.
