News item from The N.Y. Times: “Joe Sestak, a former Navy admiral and congressman from Pennsylvania, said he was joining the crowded field of Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 … Mr. Sestak became the 24th Democratic candidate running for president.

“His announcement came later than those of the other Democratic candidates. He said the delay was because he had wanted to spend time with his daughter,” who had been ill.

Greg Dennis: College reunion, with new hips and knees

Posted on June 13, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

At college reunions five through 20, you’re busy telling everyone how much you’ve achieved in life. Reunions 25 through 40 are about catching up and catching your breath for a weekend in June.

The main topics of conversation at the 45th reunion — where I found myself last week — consisted of:

“Are you retired yet?”

“Tell me about your grandchildren,” and (said in a slightly lower voice),

“How’s your health these days?”

Greg Dennis: On climate, bringing butter to a knife fight

Posted on May 30, 2019 |

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

If you want to know why the Vermont Legislature did such a miserable job of addressing climate change this year, look no further than the leadership.

House Speaker Mitzi Johnson, D-South Hero, said climate change was not even among the top five priorities for her Democratic caucus.

Senate leader Tim Ashe, D/P-Burlington, responded to a delegation of over 300 climate activists who marched to the Statehouse, by offering a figurative a slap in the face: He immediately opposed a small increase in the heating oil tax to pay for more weatherization of Vermont homes.

Greg Dennis: What if Hillary Clinton did it?

Posted on May 16, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

(Note: The following events never happened. At least not involving the individuals depicted here.)

WASHINGTON — The Republican-dominated House of Representatives moved closer this week to impeaching President Hillary Clinton.

The potential impeachment stems from allegations that Clinton and her associates obstructed justice by covering up her campaign’s involvement with Chinese hackers and the Chinese government.

Greg Dennis: More music for a desert island

Posted on May 2, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

Here’s Part 2 of the Desert Island Disc Challenge. It’s drawn from the key question in a long-running BBC Radio show: If you were to be indefinitely stranded on a desert island, what eight pieces of music would you take with you?

Part 1, in a previous column, covered the first four of those eight albums. It required this second treatise because it’s hard to be concise when it comes to music.

Those first four albums were:

•Joni Mitchell, “Blue (runner-up: “Miles of Aisles”)

Greg Dennis: Choices for the desert island list

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

If you were to be stranded on a desert island, what would you want to take with you?

BBC Radio has been asking that question for nearly 80 years. The show’s guests, known as “castaways,” are interviewed about what eight pieces of music, along with one book and one luxury item, they would choose to accompany them should they be banished to their own personal Elba.

Greg Dennis: Taking the next steps on climate change

Posted on April 4, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

The future launches at you in the most unexpected ways. It happened to some of us a few years ago when the climate movement suddenly took wing in Vermont.

As the climate crisis now grows ever more dire, the movement is shifting into higher gear. That’s got me reflecting on all the changes and where we might go from here.

Greg Dennis: Driving through a sea of words

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

The idea of driving for pleasure has never appealed to me. But as we slog through whatever early spring throws at us, there are small pleasures to be found from bumper stickers.

Here’s one I saw presaging April 15: “Unlike taxes, death doesn’t go up every year.”

There’s a mommy van out there with a sticker that mourns the driver’s past status, declaring “I used to be cool.”

Greg Dennis: John Lennon moves from sedition to stamp

America is the great cultural appropriator.

What used to be taboo is now commonplace. The once incendiary is mainstream.

Back in the 1930s it was a national language controversy when Vivien Leigh, in a scene from “Gone with the Wind,” asked Clark Gable, “Where shall I go? What shall I do?” and he replied, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Damn is, after all, a four-letter word.

Greg Dennis: Random notes from the ski slopes

Posted on March 7, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the sex expert, says that skiers make the best lovers. “They don’t sit in front of a television like couch potatoes,” she explained. “They take a risk and they wiggle their behinds. They also meet new people on the ski lift.”

She might have added that skiers get the health benefits of spending a lot of time in the great outdoors and that they are, by and large, extroverts. Maybe it’s all that time on the chairlift and in apres ski. Whatever the reason, skiing and conviviality just seem to go together.
