Bristol-area school boards and employees embrace collaborative approach to contract negotiations

Bristol considers firearms law

BRISTOL — Selectboard members are considering an ordinance that would regulate the discharge of firearms in Bristol. The ordinance, if passed, would be a first of its kind in the town.

The local law, which the Bristol selectboard heard about at their June 26 meeting, would prohibit firing a gun “within a safety zone of 500 feet from another person’s/entity’s residence, building, place of business or camper in the town of Bristol.”

Poets wanted! Bread Loaf invites local writers to share what matters to them

RIPTON — The Bread Loaf School of English and friends are inviting local people to be a part of group reading that looks to define and build community.

Anyone who writes is invited to submit a poem that they could be selected to read, alongside professional poets, at the inaugural Poetry Free for All event later this month.

Longtime Bristol police chief to retire this August

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs will retire at the end of August.

Gibbs officially announced his retirement at the Bristol Police Department staff meeting last Tuesday, June 27, saying: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the community of Bristol.”

Gibbs has served on the Bristol police force for 31 years.

Proposed law seeks path to legal status for farmworkers

VERMONT — A key to finally getting federal law changed so immigrants can more easily work on Vermont’s dairy farms is getting farmers and farm advocates here to reach out to their counterparts in Republican-leaning states. That is the analysis of people familiar with the legislative process in Washington, D.C.

They were commenting on the future of the Agricultural Worker Program Act of 2017, bill S.1034 in the U.S. Senate and bill H.R.2690 in the U.S. House.

Five-town arts guild asks local donors to take a seat

BRISTOL — Attendees at next week’s Fourth of July celebration in Bristol will get yet another chance to be sitting pretty — by bidding on one-of-a-kind, work-of-art chairs painted by local artists. The 5 Town Friends of the Arts’ “Chair-ity” event is part of the group’s annual silent auction fundraiser.

“Funky chairs can be really fun in your house,” said Chair-ity organizer Vera Ryersbach.

Six local artists are contributing this year’s chairs they have painted in a variety of creative and funky ways:

County to benefit from beefed up Farm to School law

ADDISON COUNTY — Legislation signed by Gov. Phil Scott is intended to strengthen and expand the state’s Farm to School efforts, and it should have a sizable impact locally.

“Addison County’s the largest agricultural producer in the state, so you know there’ll be an impact,” said ACORN Executive Committee Member Annie Harlow. “It will benefit us economically, nutritionally and educationally.”

STARKSBORO — Unbound Grace, a youth program in Starksboro, doesn’t just teach kids to ride horses.

“This program connects children to recognize their strengths. And they’re empowered and set out on their life journey to take those talents and embrace them to their greatest ability and then share them back with the community,” said Kerry Kurt, who founded and runs the program.

Volunteers strike out on path to build Trail Around Bristol

BRISTOL — When Bristol resident Porter Knight put out an all-points bulletin for anyone interested in working on a Trail Around Bristol to attend an exploratory meeting, she hoped she’d get at least six people.

She was telling herself, “If I get six people, I’ll be like, ‘This is good. This is a good working group.’”

The meeting this past Wednesday drew more than 40 participants, who spent the evening brainstorming and emerged with the beginnings of an action plan to make this long-standing dream a reality.
