BRISTOL — Pete Lossman was among the 70 or so Bristol residents at Monday night’s hearing in Holley Hall on a proposed ordinance to regulate the discharge of firearms in Bristol.

He was among the many who claimed the ordinance would burden responsible gun owners only, while doing nothing to curb the “stupid” behavior of those who lack the common sense to use guns safely.

STARKSBORO — Soon-to-be first grader Charlie Hill is building a LEGO bulldozer. It’s got a big rock in the bucket, a little LEGO guy on the back, and big wheels. Charlie is immensely proud of his creation. And he’s more-than-happily engrossed as he drives it back and forth along the floor and demonstrates repeatedly how the bucket goes up and down.

But this isn’t just any bulldozer, and Charlie’s not using just any playdough.

NEW HAVEN — Three months after natural gas started flowing through the 41-mile Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury, Vermont Gas Systems continues to come under fire for deviations from construction specifications laid out in its state permit.

The Vermont Public Utility Commission has asked the company for explanations to account for construction-related deviations from the permit and evidence that no other deviations exist along the entire length of the pipeline.

Addison County residents, a rainy summer means fewer picnics or fewer dips in a favorite swimming hole. But for the county’s 800-some-odd farms, bad weather can be a make-or-break proposition.

Following days of rain, the New Haven River jumped its banks on July 1, flooding much of Golden Well Farm and Apiaries in New Haven, ruining most of its vegetable crop.

“We lost basically about 80 percent of what we had planted this year,” said Golden Well farmer Nicole Burke.

ADDISON COUNTY — Nearly constant rain and cool weather has set Addison County farmers on their heels this summer.

Hay quality is down. Corn is struggling.

Many cornfields were never even planted because the ground was too wet to get tilling and planting machinery onto the land. And now in some spots acres of weeds — not corn — stand towering over the nubs of last year’s stalks.

“It’s an ugly year; that’s all,” said Rico Balzano, Agronomy Outreach Professional at the UVM Extension office in Middlebury.
