BRISTOL — Bristol residents working to create a trail system around Bristol reported that they’ve completed their first project: extending and improving the cross country trail behind Mount Abraham Union High School.

“We continue to be so impressed by the enthusiasm in the area,” said Porter Knight, the Bristol Recreation Club board member who is spearheading the trails initiative. “We had people from elementary age to their mid-70s helping on the trail. And I had feedback from several people saying it was a ton of fun.

NEW HAVEN — New Haven continues to pioneer in its engagements with renewable energy development.

It is among the first towns to have submitted a hopeful Act 174-compliant energy plan to the Department of Public Service.

Last month, it also became the first town to have its energy plan rejected.

“Of course, we’re disappointed,” said New Haven selectboard Chair Kathy Barrett.

BRISTOL — Bristol police are now unionized.

On July 19, Bristol police voted unanimously to join the New England Police Benevolent Association after two NEPBA representatives visited the Bristol Police Department in person and made a presentation about member benefits. NEW HAVEN — Taborri Bruhl’s world changed four years ago on the day he learned the African western black rhino had gone extinct.

“It just struck me as, ‘That’s permanent.’ You can’t undo extinction,” said the 50-year-old New Haven resident.

While many grieved as part of the collective tsunami of sadness, Bruhl decided to act.

A former U.S. Marine and son of an Air Force serviceman, Bruhl enlisted himself in a new battle — for sustainability.

MIDDLEBURY — Close to 100 people gathered Monday evening in Middlebury for a rally in solidarity with those opposing white nationalists, in response to the weekend’s tragic events in Charlottesville, Va.

BRISTOL — Had he been just a little bit shorter, longtime Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs might have become an Air Force pilot, but at 6-foot-4 he was too tall to fit in the cockpit by Air Force specs.

Instead his desire to serve his community and — he frankly admits — a love of the adrenalin that comes from being the calm authority figure in an emergency led to 38 years as a policeman, 31 of those with the Bristol Police Department.

Gibbs joined the Bristol police in 1986, and became chief in 1992.

ORWELL — Best known for its holiday turkeys and year-round frozen turkey sausage, Stonewood Farm is experimenting with something new.

Popcorn.

“We’ve been fooling around with it off and on for 10 years on a small scale, just for home use,” said Paul Stone. “Two, three years ago we got serious about it and grew an acre and started selling it at the (Middlebury Natural Foods) Co-op. So now we’re up to 3.5 acres this year.”
