STARKSBORO — At its Tuesday night meeting, the Starksboro selectboard signed an option-to-lease agreement with Waterbury-based Green Lantern to develop an 150-kilowatt solar array on the town’s old landfill.

“It seems to me that it’s well positioned for a solar array,” said Starksboro selectboard Chair Susan Jefferies. “There aren’t a lot of development opportunities for that site. It’s a brownfield site.”

MIDDLEBURY— Among the many veterans profiled in the Independent have been ones who landed on D-Day or fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Waltham Army veteran Pam Norton exemplifies a kind of quiet courage, also important in military service, putting duty before all, at one point even before her new family.

“You go where you’ve got to go and do what you’ve got to do,” said Norton.

MIDDLEBURY — “It’s a mess in Washington,” Congressman Peter Welch told a group of Champlain Valley specialty crop farmers who gathered in Middlebury last week to share their wish lists for the 2018 farm bill. But, despite the dysfunction in much of the nation’s capital,  the Vermont Democrat said there is still hope because there tends to be bipartisan support to “get a decent farm bill.”

Key to building that support, he said, is first gathering specific concerns and recommendations from constituents.

MIDDLEBURY — Three-hundred-twenty-five years ago, in a farm village now just a three-and-a-half-hour drive away, 14 women and five men were hanged and one man pressed to death with stones over accusations of witchcraft.

The incident has long captured the imagination of writers, artists and observers of human nature, so much so that in many ways it is still with us today.

BRISTOL — It’s lunchtime at Mount Abraham Union High School and the large cafeteria is abuzz with students eating, chatting, laughing and catching a few fun moments with friends before the next bell rings and they troop off to classes.

More than anything, it’s loud. Deafeningly so. But it’s a lively loud, with so many students happy to be out of class, get some food, sit with buddies and take a break.

MONKTON — Some citizens at Monday’s Addison Northeast Supervisory Union information session on a proposed $35 million school building bond were all for it. But a question about the cost to taxpayers proved to be a sticking point for some at the meeting.

Attendees wrestled with the statement by supporters of the Mount Abraham Union High School renovation plan that the proposed 2017 $35 million bond would result in a smaller tax increase than the proposed 2014 $32.6 million bond that voters defeated.
