MIDDLEBURY — Drivers heading down Route 7 south of Middlebury will undoubtedly notice a structure on the side of the road that may give the impression that one is in the countryside of Ireland rather than in rural Vermont.
This structure is Louis Nop’s newly erected metal castle, located in the backyard of his Route 7 home.
BRISTOL — The bridge across the New Haven River at South Street in the Bristol village closed for repairs Tuesday and will not open again until 2012 at the earliest, according to Bristol Town Administrator Bill Bryant.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation, known as VTrans, inspected the bridge last week as a follow up to an inspection last October.
MIDDLEBURY — While painting a wooden step stool that she constructed herself at the Rosie’s Girls summer camp this Monday, 13-year-old Amanda Moricette explained why she is attending the three-week camp at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury.
“I joined Rosie’s Girls to make new friends and learn how to build stuff,” she said. Her favorite part? Learning how to use the power tools.
BRISTOL — Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” tells the tale of identical twins, both named Antipholus, and their respective identical twin slaves, both named Dromio. Antipholus of Syracuse and his slave Dromio of Syracuse travel to the ancient city of Ephesus to find their long lost brothers, from whom they were separated at birth. When the two sets of twins are reunited, it sparks a comic series of arrests and false accusations brought about by the constant mistaking of one brother for another.
MIDDLEBURY — This year during the Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) sponsored program “Way to Go,” National Bank of Middlebury employees planned a road trip from Middlebury through the Smoky Mountains to Nashville, Tennessee, visiting the Grand ole Opry concert, Dollywood, and Elvis Presley’s “Graceland” mansion in Memphis.
LINCOLN — When she reached her mid-forties, Khenmo Drolma was diagnosed with cancer and given five years to live. The diagnosis pushed her to dedicate herself completely to the religion that she had been dabbling in since she was 30, Buddhism.
“That experience gave me the incentive to make a full spiritual commitment to Buddhism,” Khenmo said.
The nickname has been well-earned by Ploof, who, as master of the Bridport Grange, has played a key role in the Grange-sponsored program Words for Thirds program, which annually presents free dictionaries to third-graders in Addison Central Supervisory Union schools.
The Bridport Words for Thirds program has been active since 2002. It is a branch of a larger national nonprofit organization called the Dictionary Project, which was started in South Carolina in 1995 and went national two years later.
ADDISON COUNTY — On the evening of June 28, a black bear demolished a steel fence at Paul and Kristin Francoeur’s home on Shackett Road in Leicester, following the scent of grain that had been freshly laid out for the Francoeurs’ alpacas.
Kristin Francoeur explained that alpacas are protective of their food, and it appears that when one of the animals stood up to the bear he hit it with a fatal blow that broke its neck and burst an artery.
