DAR State Park to celebrate Vermont's mysterious lake monster

ADDISON — Imagine you’re on a boat. Fog swirls gently above the grey morning waters of Lake Champlain, and you’re drifting at ease on the glassy surface.

Then, in the distance, you see it — a dark, hulking figure undulating across the lake. Its body appears in small bumps above the surface as it travels.

Maybe it’s a sturgeon. The prehistoric species has had plenty of time to grow to a gargantuan size in the lake, which itself has been around for more than 10,000 years.

STARKSBORO — For skiers and boarders, the beginning of 2016 was dismal. Temperatures were high and snowfall was low. Ski resorts suffered, along with local economies. But every coin has a flip side, and for one industry, the weather was sweet.

NEW HAVEN — Megan Stearns is in mid-air. Her back leg is straight, toe pointed, and her front leg is outstretched, hurtling her body toward the ground.

Stearns is a ballerina — she’s danced her entire life — but she’s used to landing on a dance studio’s solid wood floor. Now, in this fraction of a second, while she floats several feet from the Earth, she’ll have to prepare herself to land on an uneven, unknown surface.

Grass.

MIDDLEBURY — At 6 a.m. on Sunday, while much of New England sleeps after the grind of a long workweek, Julia Clancy is awake. The young chef scans her meticulously constructed list of ingredients and instructions while loading various items — fresh herbs from the garden, maple syrup, coriander seeds — into a large box. She puts the box in her car, pulls out of her driveway in Middlebury and heads for Agricola Farm in Addison.

Clippings: Vermont identity a powerful draw

I always over pack. That sweatshirt I haven’t worn in three years — the one with the hole in the left sleeve? It comes with me every time.

My bulging suitcase barely accommodated the beloved item of clothing when I shoved it through the zippers about a month ago, on top of six mugs and more books than I bothered to count. I loaded everything into the back seat of my Honda Civic, bid adieu to my loving parents and hit the road.

ADDISON COUNTY — If you’re like many Vermonters, you have a well drilled hundreds of feet into the depths of your yard. This well probably supplies water for drinking, washing, bathing and cooking to your family — and if you’re like many Vermonters, the odds say that water’s never been tested.

ADDISON COUNTY — On Jan. 15, Riley, a healthy six-pound, 10-ounce baby boy was born to Anna and Justin Harrington at Porter Hospital. The two brought their newborn back to their home in Middlebury after an agonizing 50 hours of labor, and were ecstatic to be new parents to the little guy, who Anna lovingly called “amazing and fun.”

New weapon vs. milfoil deployed

milfoil0152.jpg

SALISBURY — Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any given work day, residents and their guests at Lake Dunmore are likely to see a coordinated team of nine working toward a common goal: ridding the lake of Eurasian watermilfoil (commonly called milfoil), a feathery invasive weed that has been choking Dunmore and its neighbor, Fern Lake, for decades.

The crew has three boats, called suction harvesters, and they collect anywhere between 20 and 100 buckets of the unwanted plant per day.
