With little water, farmers consider new irrigation plans

SHOREHAM — At 2 p.m. on a recent sunny afternoon, a group of 20 farmers stood around a giant metal reel, which pulled a hulking irrigation gun 1,300 feet toward them as it turned. The gun showered water onto the otherwise dry Elysian Fields, owned by Joe and Kathleen Hescock, which were certified organic in 1998.

The farmers were there to learn about something new for many of them — irrigating pastures where their cows graze.

NEW HAVEN — In 1948, soon-to-be 100-year-old Lucien Paquette spearheaded a new event to educate the public about new farming technology and techniques. Organizers called it Addison County Fair and Field Days.

Though Paquette has long-since retired from his position as the Addison County agricultural agent for the University of Vermont Extension, the program he worked for, continues its educational mission at Field Days 68 years later.

Entrepreneur lanches online guitar store in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — One day last month, in his storefront on Seymour Street, musician Bill Schafer, the man who once founded Otter Music and then Burlington’s Advanced Music, pulled a shiny acoustic guitar — a 2014 Guild — from the spot where it hung on the wall.

“It’s a beautiful guitar,” Schafer said, plucking a few strings that reverberated a clear, rich sound. “Guild is an American icon. They’ve been around for a long time.”

LEICESTER — Jenny Beck sits at a picnic table with her back to Lake Dunmore and the rising mountains on the opposite shore. A chorus of finely tuned chamber music wafts across the field where she’s seated. The sweet sounds emanate from the Rec Hall off to her right.

The music is being played by a group of talented high school students who have been refining their musical skills over the past three weeks.

VERGENNES — The recently unified Addison Northwest School District held its first official meeting last week at the Vergennes Union High School in the form of a four-hour training session and retreat.

ANWSD board members representing public schools in Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham were elected March 1, and the unified school district and board became official in April after no one filed a petition to reconsider the vote.

NEW HAVEN — Lucien Paquette sat back in a wooden chair at his kitchen table last week and laughed. He was telling a story about a phone conversation he’d recently had with a doctor who asked him for his birth date.

“Eight, fourteen, sixteen,” Paquette had responded.

The doctor was puzzled, and not amused.

“I had to specify, it was 1916,” Paquette said, chuckling about the confusion.

In June, a stranger handed Seven Days reporter Paul Heintz an AR-15 military-style rifle in exchange for a $500 wad of cash.

Though the two had never met before, though there was no background check performed and no photo ID presented, though the gun was handed over in the parking lot of a busy shopping center, the entire exchange was legal.

ADDISON — Imagine you’re on a boat. Fog swirls gently above the grey morning waters of Lake Champlain, and you’re drifting at ease on the glassy surface.

Then, in the distance, you see it — a dark, hulking figure undulating across the lake. Its body appears in small bumps above the surface as it travels.

Maybe it’s a sturgeon. The prehistoric species has had plenty of time to grow to a gargantuan size in the lake, which itself has been around for more than 10,000 years.

STARKSBORO — For skiers and boarders, the beginning of 2016 was dismal. Temperatures were high and snowfall was low. Ski resorts suffered, along with local economies. But every coin has a flip side, and for one industry, the weather was sweet.
