GOSHEN — Sarah Griswold, Blueberry Hill Inn’s winter chef, might be new to Vermont, but she’s been cooking like a farmer since she was a child.

Griswold grew up on a sheep farm in Danbury, Conn. There, she ate from the garden, canned her own fruits and vegetables, and learned to cook with food she grew herself. In the summertime, she worked with her uncle, who had a catering business based in Rhode Island.

“I’ve loved it since I was little,” she said.

MONTPELIER — Greta Hardy-Mittell, a junior at Middlebury Union High School, stood on the steps of the Vermont Statehouse last Saturday afternoon counting the speakers left until it was her turn. Clutching a folded paper copy of a self-authored poem, the nerves she had quieted that morning began to resurface.

The sign-waving, pussy-hat-wearing crowd before her — expected to be only a few thousand — was estimated at 15,000-20,000 by Vermont State Police, making it the largest protest ever held in Vermont, according to organizers.

VERMONT — During her 40-minute commute from Vergennes to Shelburne, Karen Chickering sings. A soprano for Vermont’s one and only jazz a cappella group, called Maple Jam, the drive offers her an ideal window of time to perfect her part before weekly rehearsal.

Chickering said she doesn’t care who’s watching.

“I don’t notice,” she said, smiling. “Both hands are on the wheel.”

MIDDLEBURY— “There’s a war going on. A war that has caused the colors of life to leave the bodies of those whose names you ascribe to fear. I will never forget how much death loves these people.”

Lena Ginawi, a slam poet and junior at South Burlington High School, stood in front of about 20 Middlebury residents last Friday in an apartment in the Marble Works Condos and recited those words.

MIDDLEBURY — Mike Cooley, Fire & Ice’s head chef, hasn’t always envisioned himself in a kitchen. As an undergraduate, he studied English literature and pre-law at Frostburg University in Maryland. MIDDLEBURY — Sitting in Middlebury’s Sama’s Cafe on Monday morning, Sujata Moorti sighed deeply.

The Middlebury College professor of Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies had been processing the results of last week’s election. Like many people around her, she believes President-elect Donald J. Trump will encourage the “rolling back” of important policies — ones that promote the well-being of women, members of the LGBTQ community, people of color and marginalized religious groups, among others.
