Vermont Choral Union marks 50 yeas with concert series

Fifty years ago, University of Vermont professor James G. Chapman founded the Vermont Choral Union ? a community-based a cappella choral group. The ensemble of 36 singers is still going strong, now with Middlebury’s Jeff Rehbach at the helm. Rehbach will lead the Vermont Choral Union in three anniversary concerts next week: at the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College on Friday, at the McCarthy Recital Hall at St. Michael’s College on Saturday and at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier on Sunday.

Haitian band to play at Town Hall Theater April 18

MIDDLEBURY — Town Hall Theater and Middlebury Underground present Haitian band Lakou Mizik on Tuesday, April 18 at the Middlebury theater. Lakou Mizik is a multigenerational collective of Haitian musicians formed in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake. The group includes elder legends and rising young talents, united in a mission to honor the healing spirit of their collective culture and communicate a message of pride, strength and hope to their countrymen and the world.

Jim Geier rocks his chairs into perfection

STARKSBORO — Back in 1975, Jim Geier made his first Vermont Folk Rocker. The ‘65 Saint Mike’s College grad was renovating houses in the Burlington area at the time and had some two-by-fours, plywood and clothes line laying around. So, naturally, he made a hammock.

Irish theater company to perform Beckett's 'Molloy' at Vermont Coffee stage

MIDDLEBURY — Gare St Lazare Ireland, an Irish theater company led by husband-wife team Conor and Judy Lovett, celebrates 20 years of touring Beckett’s prose internationally with a revival of “Molloy.” The couple will perform the first solo show of this tour on the Vermont Coffee Company’s stage at 1197 Exchange Street in Middlebury at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday evening.

Doors tribute to raise funds for leukemia

MIDDLEBURY — Next Thursday, April 13, Middlebury’s Marquis Theater will present “End of The Night ? A Tribute to the Music of The Doors” to benefit a fundraising drive spearheaded by Silver Maple Construction’s Sean Flynn. Watch Vermont Allstars Josh Panda, Clint Bierman, Tyler Mast and Sean Preece channel “The Doors” on the big stage, and help raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Owners of the Inn at Baldwin Creek and Mary’s Restaurant in Bristol, Doug Mack and Linda Harmon, are away in Italy for a culinary tour. So naturally, their daughter/bartender Laura Mack and sous chef Carin Fredette are throwing a kitchen-takeover party from April 5-9.

Moira Smiley comes home for roots revival

BRISTOL — Since she was 12-years-old, Moira Smiley has been recording people singing and speaking. “I’ve always been more of a listener than a speaker,” she said in an interview last month. It’s part of her mission as an artist: “to broadcast the notion that the human voice is vastly flexible and sensitive. And if we pay attention, we can understand each other on a deeper level.”

'Off the Rails': Documentary explores true story of Darius McCollum

The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival this Sunday presents “Off The Rails” for the fifth film in this year’s Winter Screening Series. Since January, MNFF has showed one film a month that focuses on prominent work by first and second time filmmakers; the series concludes with the sixth and final film in May.
