Remember these words:

“No dessert until after you’ve finished your ______.” Brussels sprouts, lima beans, okra… whatever overcooked, slimy, totally gross vegetable you left piled in the corner of your dinner plate.

Most of us remember these words coming from our parents, but it’s not something Erin Bettencourt says to her three kids. In fact she believes just the opposite.

“Life is short. Eat dessert first.”

Witches. The mean ones we know from their clammy green skin, long pointy noses covered with warts, sharp crooked teeth and chilling cackle. The nice ones comfort us with their rosy cheeks, warm smile and sparkling eyes. What do they have in common? Magic.

Did you know Middlebury has its own witch? Her name is Nancie Dunn — don’t worry, she’s a nice one.

Meet the chef: Bill Snell from Tourterelle in New Haven

Kitchens can be stressful places. Sharp knifes fiercely chop, dice and mince the day’s ingredients. Hot pots bubble on a flaming stove. The chefs and cooks must work efficiently together, without getting in each other’s way, to quickly produce beautiful dishes for hungry customers.

A spill here, a slip there… could be the difference between great success and utter catastrophe. So it’s easy to understand how tensions can run a little hot.

But at Tourterelle in New Haven, head chef Bill Snell tries to keep it cool.

Comedy crew cracks up at the Middlebury Marquis

Comedy crew Comedienes6629 edit.jpg

Sometimes life can get too serious. Just a week’s worth of national headlines these days is enough to wipe the smiles from our faces and leave us huddling under the blankets in bed. But that’s no way to go through life now, is it?

No. Decidedly not.

Laughter, smiles, comedy — they just might be the only way through the disasters of each day. Not only does laughing make us “friendlier, more resourceful, more attractive and more radiantly alive,” but it also has physical health benefits.

Koehler turns pocket orchard into award-winning ice cider

n Koehler Windfallorchard LEAD 2336.jpg

Cocktail-culture is back. But you already know that.

We’ve seen craft cideries, breweries, wineries, distilleries and specialty cocktail bars pop up and grow all around our county and state in the last five to 10 years. But have you ever wondered why these specialty libations have become so popular?

Brad Koehler, owner of Windfall Orchard, has a few theories.

Koehler’s in the craft alcohol biz. He uses the fruit he grows in Cornwall to make high-quality hard cider, ice wine and perry (similar to hard cider, but made from pears).

n Quilting season wraps QuiltRachel3985.jpg

Fact: tomorrow is the first day of fall. It’s hard not to get a little depressed as the warm summer days shorten, our colorful gardens fade, and we swap our shorts and sandals for sweaters and boots.

But, it’s not all bad. Fall brings the delights of harvest season, pies, pumpkins, corn mazes, hay rides, warm fireplaces and cozy beds layered with quilts.

n Emory LEAD 4890.jpg

Emory Fanning sat down lightly on the seat, stretched his fingers over the keys, and let his feet hover at the ready over the foot pedals. A gentle pull of a stop, flickering of his right fingers and the great hall of Middlebury’s Mead Chapel filled with a traditional organ melody. The sounds grew as he employed his left hand, and then feet, reaching a crescendo that held tones ringing in the 1917 building’s ceiling.

Christal Brown: Directed by dance

CristalBrown2590 cropped.jpg

When’s the last time you let your body express something through dance? Or does the mere thought of “dance” bring you back to the terror of some middle school dance that left you staring hard at the gym floor, palms sweating, wishing desperately no one would ask you to coordinate your awkwardly clunky feet?

Ya, we understand. And, guess what? You’re not alone.

Christal Brown, the dance program chair at Middlebury College and new dance director for Middlebury’s Parks and Rec Center, has good news.
