By Elsie Lynn Parini

SabaiSabai5081.jpg

Meet Chef Noi. That means “little chef” in Thai, “but he’s not little,” joked Noi’s wife, Tip. And she’s right, Chef Noi (officially named Thammarong Uttamang) is anything but little. He not only has a large stature, but also a large heart and large dreams. Chef Noi and Tip (who’s real name isn’t Tip, it’s Taphatsnun Sinpaksawat) moved to Middlebury five years ago with the hopes of running their own restaurant.

Materials needed: seven women, yarn, yoga and a business on Main Street in Bristol.

Just like a knitting project, this story starts with a simple idea. But as any knitter knows, simple ideas aren't always that simple.

Vergennes goes wild for chili and chocolates

It's classic: sweet and spicy. We know it to be true from any good romance novel or heart-pounding salsa dance. The crush of spicy hot and sensual sweet is undeniably irresistible. And so it was last Saturday in Vergennes during the second annual Chili and Chocolate on the Green festival.

Beth Marr AlmostHome9657.jpg

OK, so Beth Marr might not be a chef by training, but she’s been in the food and service industry for over 25 years. Plus she’s originally from Louisiana so she’s got some of that southern hospitality in her blood. But working in food service can test even the best of the best.

ZigZag Nina.jpg

Stuck in the closet? Not anymore. Writers and artists throughout Addison County now have a literary magazine that will consider their work for publication. Zig Zag Lit Mag — a 64-page, black and white, 8.5-inch by 5.5-inch printed magazine — will release it's first edition today, Thursday, Sept. 22. And there's a party to celebrate. Head over to Bixby Library in Vergennes at 6 p.m. tonight. (Psst, there will be free doughnuts.)

'80s rockers go hillbilly

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

TheGrift9281.jpg
We all love the '80s right? Why wouldn't you? Wild hair, overstated duds, amazing dance moves and epic guitar riffs. But here in Vermont (ahem, Addison County) we might not be 100 percent '80s rockers at heart (we'll leave that for the students on the hill). Gotta get us some of that finger-pickin', foot-stompin' bluegrass twang before it's a real party.

Get ready, because the best of both worlds are hitting the stage on Friday night at the Marquis in Middlebury. Yes, that's right, an '80s Bluegrass Hillbilly Ball — get excited!

Monkton man lets the harmonica speak

MarkLavoie7808.jpg

Typically in an interview, the reporter asks a question and the subject answers (as best they can anyway). Well, thats not how it happened last week when I interviewed Mark Lavoie on the phone. I (the reporter) asked the questions and Lavoie (the subject) answered through his harmonica. No joke, he played several different riffs and diddies in place of sentences and explanations.

Cool, yes. But how am I going to put these sounds into words?

Pints are being served, cans are coming!

Posted on September 12, 2016 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

It might surprise you, but until mid-July, Drop-In Brewing couldn’t actually serve you a pint. That’s right, they were officially a tasting room and brewery, and could only serve tasting portions or take-home-size growlers.

That’s always been important for them and the Guild, but Steve and Christine also saw the potential to create more of a gathering spot for their diehard fans and to create a slightly different vibe for their students.
