Five professional actors share their stories

Posted on April 23, 2018 |

These five actors are only a handful of the many professional players in Vermont. They are all members of Middlebury Actors Workshop (MAW) — a professional theater company that produces plays locally. Like, for example, "The Christians" (click here to read the review), which runs April 26-29 at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury.

Folk musicians revive old tunes for new times

Folk music isn’t just old-timey tunes your ancestors sang while darning socks on the porch swing. OK, well, maybe the lyrics come from way-back-when, but the songs are making a comeback in the avant-guard folk music scene today.

See for yourself on Saturday, April 21, at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury, when duo Anna & Elizabeth perform tracks from their latest album, and New Haven native Moira Smiley adds her solo flare.

Ever wonder how musicians create a folk album?

ParkSqueeze5624.jpg

This April, Justin Patras celebrates five years as head chef at Park Squeeze in Vergennes. But he’s been working in kitchens much longer than that — 20 years, to be exact.

“I grew up in food,” he said during an interview last month. “Both of my parents cooked, so I was exposed to it at an early age.”

Patras’ mother used to cook for the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery (where Patras was raised). His father worked as the sous chef at Hotel Jay.

Music enthusiasts won’t want to miss the show coming to the Vergennes Opera House this Saturday. Why? Well, first, audiences will get to enjoy music by the local funky jazz quartet “The Good Parts.” Then “Bear Tread” will take the stage, featuring Dave Hebert, formerly of the “Jerry Garcia Band” (until 2016), on guitar and vocals; and Greg Koerner, formerly of the “Dark Star Orchestra,” on bass. If you need one more reason, legendary drummer Kenwood Dennard will join Herbert and Koerner on stage this Saturday.

Teenage girls talk freely in 'The Wolves'

Wolves Cast.jpg

Soccer skills aren’t usually a requirement for actors. In fact, most of us have probably observed the natural separation of “jocks” and “theater rats” — a bit like oil and water. But the Middlebury College Department of Theater and Dance is intentionally mixing it up by bringing actors into the field house and soccer balls onto the stage with their spring production, “The Wolves” by Sarah DeLappe.

Assistant professor Michole Biancosino is directing the cast of nine female students for this performance.

New community theater 'shows up' with Anne of Green Gables musical

Picture this: The lights go dark on a theater packed with an eager audience, tension builds in the silence until places are taken and props set. Everyone is frozen; waiting for the cue to begin the scene.

How do you feel?

Some of us get knots in our stomach at the idea of performing, so we imagine ourselves in the audience; others put themselves behind the scenes. But for the theatrically inclined, well, they see themselves front-and-center on the stage.

The Event

Cantastoria is a street theater form championed by Bread and Puppet — a North East Kingdom theater company founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann — that involves the performance of pictures through the use of song, movement, text and puppetry. The word “canta-storia” comes from Italian (sung story), though the form has its roots in India circa 600 AD and has flourished in various guises all over Europe and Asia for the last 1,500 years.

Meet the chef: Christian Kruse from Vergennes Laundry CK

When you imagine a meal in a Laundromat it’s not glamorous. Maybe you have a candy bar and a bottle of warm soda as you watch your clothes spin around, or perhaps a smashed hamburger from a fast food joint down the road. Either way, it’s not awesome.

That is, it wasn’t awesome until 2010, when Didier and Julianne Murat transformed the original Vergennes Laundromat at 7 Main St. into a French-inspired bakery.

Fifth annual Carnevale Vergennes goes wild

The Vergennes Opera House will welcome intricately masked guests into a fantastical scene on Saturday for its fifth annual Carnevale Vergennes. Like last year, the event will ring with festive music as partygoers feast on local food and drink, play games for the chance to win prizes and enjoy a late night of partying with friends. No need to feel guilty for this night out on the town — all proceeds benefit the Vergennes Opera House, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes and the Vergennes Partnership.

New classic film club reels in community fans

Mr Smith goes to Washington.jpg

Out with the old and in with the new — that’s an old adage that many of us know to be… uh, well, just plain wrong. So many things are better with age; think of a fine cheese, a vintage bottle of wine, how about grandparents…? You get the idea.

A new club in Middlebury wants to add classic films to that list of oldies but goodies.
