Obstacle running: Bristol man won't take the easy path

BRISTOL — Who is that group on Mount Abe running with weights on their backs and determination in their faces?

It’s probably Brian Ladeau and Team Sinergy, a group of Vermonters hooked on obstacle course racing.

For the past four years, Ladeau, a 45-year-old Bristol resident and the owner of Otter Creek Custom Framing in Middlebury, has been running, hiking and lifting his way through some of the toughest obstacle courses around.

Ladeau said the passion started out as a dare among gym buddies.

Schools out, but kids can still get free lunches

ADDISON COUNTY — With the first signs of summer come expectations of sun, lemonade, popsicles and, here in Vermont, fresh fruit and vegetables. 

However, for those children who qualify for free or reduced-price meals during the school year, summer is potentially a two-and-a-half-month stretch without stable, nutritious meals. 

Last May, 38 percent of students in Addison County qualified for subsidized school meals, and 42 percent throughout Vermont qualified.

Food for All helps make healthy food accessible

MIDDLEBURY — As part of its broader mission to make healthy food more accessible to people in Addison County, the Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op (MNFC) is running two programs — Food for All and Co-op Basics — that help people in the community struggling to overcome a number of barriers.

Food for All offers a free membership to the Co-op, a 10 percent discount, and free access to food-related classes offered by the Co-op.

Co-op Basics offers discounted prices on grocery staples, and it is offered to all customers.

Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op works to ease local food insecurity

MIDDLEBURY — Nearly one in eight Vermont households and one in five Vermont children are food insecure, as of May 2015, according to Hunger Free Vermont. In Addison County, one in five children struggle with food insecurity, says the statewide advocacy and education organization that works to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in Vermont.

Partnership honors brokerage, citizen

MIDDLEBURY — The Better Middlebury Partnership honored IPJ Real Estate of Middlebury as the Business of The Year at that organization’s annual meeting Tuesday night at American Flatbread. Jutta Miska received BMP’s Citizen of the Year designation.

Miska was honored because of her years of volunteer efforts with youth. As co-director of the Addison Central Teens Organization, she worked with local teens and community members to establish and develop the local teen center, 94 Main Street, in Middlebury.

BRISTOL — Join friends old and new in downtown Bristol this Saturday as Main Street is turned into a showcase for Vermont’s funkiest tunes, food, drinks and fun at the seventh Pocock Rocks Music Festival and Street Fair.

After a hiatus last year, Pocock Rocks is back from 3 to 8 p.m. and open to all who want to kick off the summer with style and a little groove. Local bands will be rocking all day with back-to-back performances on two stages at either end of the street.

Donation of lungs gives Bristol woman new life

BRISTOL — Bristol resident Tammy Shackett was once an active member of her local community, but eventually she was forced to rely on an oxygen tank to breathe due to a lifelong struggle with lung problems.

After four years of waiting for a suitable lung donor, the 52-year-old announced on March 12 that she was done.

“It’s going to come when it comes and if it doesn’t I’m just going to adapt to living on oxygen,” she recounted in an interview this week. “I wasn’t giving up on life, I was giving up on waiting.”
