ADDISON COUNTY — For Doug Wilson, a Middlebury College sophomore from Hershey, Penn., the Charter House in Middlebury is home for the summer. In exchange for room and board, Wilson is kept busy picking tomatoes, squash, berries and garlic.

He’s helping harvest the more than 5,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables that the Charter House Coalition uses to prepare and serve meals to the community seven days a week.

And he’s embracing every minute of it.

MIDDLEBURY — Thanks to a huge new piece of machinery, the Cabot manufacturing plant in Middlebury’s industrial park will be able to process 4,000 more pounds of cheese curd per hour than the 8,000 pounds the current machine handles.

That’s as much weight as a fully grown great white shark or a large family car … every hour.

In Vermont, where cheese season never ends, that’s an announcement worth moo-ing about.

For expectant parents, a lifetime of choices awaits: baby names, what brand of diapers to use, what color to paint the nursery and even what kind of doctor to use.

MIDDLEBURY — In his second year as a student at Middlebury College, Tommy Hyde took a film class that required students to spend a month with a local who was doing something “interesting.” Hyde found Doug Butler, full-time dairy farmer and dog sled racer.

Upon meeting Butler, Hyde was sure he had discovered true, old-school Vermont.

“Soon I found myself on the back of a sled ripping around trails behind this long-haired, wide-eyed, crazy, kooky old Vermonter,” he said.
