MONKTON — After tromping in shin-deep snow through some of the 11 eco-zones on the Willowell Foundation’s property off Stoney Meadow Lane in Monkton, we come to a clearing. I am sure I have stumbled upon some kind of Narnia, the fantasy land created by children’s author C.S. Lewis.

A large shelter insulated in old sails looms like a giant’s cave. The shelter’s frame is built of cedar beams the students harvested from the woods — without a single nail. The imposing structure will be replaced with a cabin this spring.

MIDDLEBURY — Last Friday seven tiny kindergarten students from Nikki Juvan’s class at St. Mary’s School filed into the Middlebury College Museum of Art. As part of the college’s MiddArts program, this visit was a carefully planned exercise in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a curriculum for teaching art to primary and secondary school students.

Bristol school focuses on hands-on learning

BRISTOL — The snow-covered field behind the red schoolhouse off Hardscrabble Road in Bristol was filled with the sounds of industry and eager voices Monday morning. A young boy wielded an axe as another stood by critiquing his stance.

“Legs wide so you don’t chop off your feet,” the second boy said, and the first boy brought the axe down deliberately on a piece of wood, splitting it down the middle. A young girl took the splinters to the outdoor cob oven for kindling.

Clippings: 20-somethings on the launch pad

“Honey, listen,” my father says, “you and your brother are 99 percent likely to give back to society. But there’s always that 1 percent, and you’ve got some artistic tendencies.”

This was a motivational speech given to me the summer after my junior year of college.
