BRIDPORT — Not many organizations can claim to be the oldest of their kind in the United States. Then again, the 200-year-old Addison Bridport Detective Society is not like most organizations.

Begun on Dec. 16, 1816, when roughly two dozen men assembled in the barn of Alan Smith in Addison for its inaugural meeting, the Detective Society has met continuously every year since, making it the oldest association of private investigators in the country that still actively meets, according to Ed Mitcham, the society’s outgoing secretary.

Selingo talks on higher ed.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Every year, national newspapers are overrun with headlines about how getting into college has become more difficult than ever before. Yet, as Jeffrey Selingo argued Monday afternoon before a crowd of 50 people in Middlebury College’s Dana Auditorium, those stories largely miss the point.

“Are you bringing your board?”

It was January and I was in California, packing up my car to drive back to Middlebury College in Vermont when I read that text from my friend and fellow wild man Christian Johansen.

What? Was I bringing my surfboard to Vermont, a landlocked state, in the middle of winter? Was he out of his mind?

MIDDLEBURY — The Voncujovi brothers — Sena, a junior at Middlebury College, and Pele, a freshman — use a variety of tools to spread their message about the West African religion known as voodoo or vodu.

Social media is a big one, they said. The two have their own Instagram account dedicated specifically to vodu. Their father’s temple in Ghana has its own Facebook page. They frequently post videos and photos of their ceremonies on Snapchat, complete with written explanations of what they’re doing and why.

HAVANA, Cuba — Two weeks ago in a cool, tiled room in Havana, Cuba, Sena Voncujovi handed me a chicken. As instructed, I held it from behind, thumb and forefinger slipped under its wings. I thanked it, whispered my struggles into its left ear and my wishes into its right one, before passing it back to Sena, who calmly pressed a knife to its throat and offered its life to Eleguá, the spirit guardian of the crossroads. A moment later, his younger brother Pele snapped a photo for Instagram.

MIDDLEBURY — With the sleet coming down hard on an early spring day, Peter Howe glances out the window, laces up his running shoes and heads for Chipman Hill. His stride is light, easy and relaxed as he climbs through the muddy, slushy slop. On a day when some athletes choose to stay indoors, the 19-year-old Middlebury College sophomore of Gilmanton Ironworks, N.H., is on his second outdoor run of the afternoon.

Students of color challenged in Vermont

MIDDLEBURY — For many students from big cities, moving to rural Vermont can be a big adjustment. For students of color, in particular, the contrast between life at home and life in the Green Mountain State, which is the second whitest state in the country according to the 2010 U.S. Census, can be especially sharp.

The difference is noticeable in everything from the limited diversity of their professors and classmates to grabbing a meal at the dining hall and getting a haircut.

Just ask Amari Simpson, an African-American senior at Middlebury College.

Crowds get a taste of Elizabethan England at First Folio Festival

First Folio 3.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — The First Folio Festival on Feb. 18 transformed Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts into a portal to the Elizabethan Era.

An estimated 380 people enjoyed an evening of live Renaissance music from The Penny Lane Consort and the Middlebury Mountain Ayres, a theater production from the Middlebury Actors Workshop, and gallery talks by Professors Timothy Billings and James Berg. Yet, despite the lively program, the real star of the show — locked in a dimly lit, climate-controlled, immovable Plexiglas case — was a book.
