ANESU budget proposal

BRISTOL — The board of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union last week approved a 6.2 percent increase in spending for the 2007-2008 school over the current year. But thanks to a projected budget surplus and additional state and federal funds, the portion of the budget coming from the five towns in the school district — Bristol, Starksboro, Monkton, New Haven and Lincoln — will rise by less than 1 percent.

Middlebury - Rutland bus route to debut

ADDISON COUNTY — Two Vermont transit organizations soon will begin offering weekday bus service between Middlebury and Rutland.

Officials from Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) and the Marble Valley Regional Transit District (MVRTD) said the service, which will run several times a day during the workweek beginning Dec. 4, will make it easier for people to commute to and from both towns.

Wet weather hurting Vermont's dairy farmers

ADDISON COUNTY — Many people have been glad to see a break in the rain that has seemed almost constant over the last month. But for those who till the soils and milk cows the wet weather has combined with depressed milk prices and high fuel costs to create what some are referring to as a perfect storm for swamping Vermont’s dairy industry.

Gov. James Douglas this week called for federal disaster assistance to aid dairy farmers and said he would convene a special dairy summit by the end of the month to see what more could be done.
