Mt. Abe principal aims high for students — and herself

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School Principal Jessica Barewicz pulled her first all-nighter in 12th grade.

“We had to do a project based on independent reading, and I chose ‘The Fountainhead,’” she says, laughing. “That tells you a little bit about me as a child.”

A fat, philosophical novel published in 1943 by Russian-American writer Ayn Rand, “The Fountainhead” tells the story of a headstrong architect warring with himself and fighting against the system.

Farmers want credit for their work keeping land and air clean

MONTPELIER — A broad-based coalition of Vermont farmers headed to Montpelier Friday to propose a pilot project that could transform the state’s accounting system for agriculture.

Developed by the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition of Addison and Rutland counties, the Franklin-Grand Isle Farmer’s Watershed Alliance and the Connecticut River Watershed Farmers Alliance, the project concept is simple:

Pay farmers to produce healthy soil, clean water and a sustainable working landscape.

Race for Bristol board tops 5-town warnings

BRISTOL — As the Jan. 28 deadline approaches, Town Meeting Day petitions have begun trickling in from citizens running for public office and from organizations seeking fiscal support.

In the 5-town area in the northeastern part of Addison County only one race is set, but anyone interested in getting their name on the ballot must submit a petition to their town clerk by end of day this coming Monday.

In Bristol, at least three people have declared candidacy for two selectboard seats.

Bristol writes off loan to cookie maker Liz Lovely

BRISTOL — More than $75,000 officially went up in smoke last week when the Bristol selectboard voted to write off a debt the town can no longer collect.

“Basically this is just cleaning up the record for the bank,” said selectboard chair Peter Coffey at last week’s board meeting.

Bristol Hub director resigning

BRISTOL — The Bristol Hub Teen Center & Skatepark will say good-bye to its director Saturday.

Brian LaClair has resigned from the Hub, effective Jan. 26, in order to take a job as Parks & Recreation Director for the town of Fairfax.

“It’s definitely a bittersweet move for me,” LaClair said. “The Hub has been my home for the last few years and has set me on a wonderful career path.”

LaClair took over as the Hub’s director in June 2018, after serving for two years as its programs manager.

Bristol suffers limited water service interruptions

BRISTOL -- Water service in Bristol will be interrupted today, Jan. 23, for a few dozen properties in and around Mountain Street Extension as the water department investigates and repairs a water line break in nearby woods.

“The repair effort is underway,” the town reported on Facebook around 9 o’clock this morning. “Water service will not be affected until the leak has been fully located, cleared and the replacement parts are ready to be installed.”

Firefighters association celebrates 75 years

FERRISBURGH — Pack a great big hall with nearly 200 firefighters, give them an hour at the cash bar, feed them and seat them on either side of a long, wide aisle, and chances are that anyone who has to walk down that aisle to collect an award is going to get catcalled, sometimes in ways that can’t be reprinted in newspapers.

Frank Bruni tells college kids to embrace differences

MIDDLEBURY — As a teenager in the early 1980s, New York Times op-ed columnist Frank Bruni decided that in college he would live openly as a gay man.

But when he walked into his dorm room at the University of North Carolina for the first time and saw the enormous poster his new roommate had hung on the wall, which said, “Jesus invites you to a banquet in His honor,” Bruni changed his mind.

Midd students study free speech trends
