BRISTOL — “Can you hear me now?”

In Holley Hall, where a new sound system made its debut at Bristol’s annual town meeting March 5, the answer was a resounding “Yes.”

The system is part of a $75,000 acoustic upgrade that also included a ceiling treatment and sound-dampening window shades.

Those who struggled through concerts, theatrical productions and public meetings in the cavernous space said the improvements were long overdue.

Voters reject Mount Abe bond for third time; new approaches sought

Posted on March 8, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

ADDISON COUNTY — After voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Tuesday defeated a $29.5 million bond for the renovation of Mount Abraham Middle/High School, 1,785–1,196, the pressing question is, “What now?”

The bond’s defeat for the third time most likely delays any construction until at least 2020, pending the ability of the 5-town community to agree on a building project, vote for a bond and start the design phase.

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard at its Feb. 19 meeting inched closer to signing a license agreement with Vermont Gas Systems to bring natural gas service to Bristol.

“At some point we’re going to have to say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ on this,” said selectboard member Peter Coffey. Convinced the pipeline would attract new businesses to Bristol and increase the town’s grand list, he announced he was prepared to vote in favor of the project.

Selectboard member Michelle Perlee also said she would vote “yes.”

Bristol to vote on 1.5 percent town spending increase

Posted on February 12, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — At the annual town meeting next month, Bristol voters will be asked to approve a fiscal year 2019 municipal spending plan that represents an increase of 1.5 percent to $2,609,402, and would require a projected increase of 2.7 percent in the municipal tax rate.

While the budget warned by the selectboard would make small changes in the big-ticket highway and general fund spending items, the biggest shifts would be in spending on the recreation department (down 10.3 percent) and voter appropriations (up 11.7 percent).
