Midd grad Andrew Forsthoefel learns big lessons during epic walk

MIDDLEBURY — On the same day that students across the nation quit their classrooms to protest gun violence, prompting debates among their supporters over “walking out” vs. “walking up,” the Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury welcomed a walker of epic accomplishment.

Andrew Forsthoefel walked from Pennsylvania to California after he graduated from Middlebury College in 2011. Last year he published a book about the experience, “Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America, One Story at a Time.”

New pellet-fired equipment streamlines Goshen maple sugaring operation

GOSHEN — Sugaring season is off to a great start for Ethan West and his partner Annina Seiler.

Their operation, dubbed Republic of Vermont, doubled its taps to 4,000 this year, and West has just installed a new wood pellet-fired evaporator.

Since installing the new equipment, he’s faced one dilemma he didn’t expect.

“At first I was kind of bored, actually,” West said.

Second forum on Mount Abe set for Saturday

BRISTOL — A community group seeking creative solutions to address the needs of Mount Abraham Union High School will convene its second meeting this Saturday, March 31, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the school.

The mission of the 5-Town Community Forum is to foster vigorous but respectful debate, encourage diverse participation and create an environment where residents can develop their ideas, according to leaders of the forum.

Mount Abe travel club broadens horizons, plans third international trip

BRISTOL — For April vacation this year 35 Mount Abraham Union High School students and six chaperones will exchange the Green Mountains of Vermont for the green hills and highlands of Ireland and Scotland.

This is the third international trip sponsored by the newly reconstituted Mt. Abe Travel Club, advised by social studies teacher Jess Little and assistant principal Justin Bouvier. Last year students traveled to Belize and in 2016 toured five European countries.

ANSWERING A CALL from the group Mount Abe Student Activists to light a fire under those in charge of school safety, students and other community members gathered Saturday at the Bristol Town Green and vowed to continue their efforts to end gun violence. Performers from the school's spring musical, “Fame,” close the event on a positive note by singing “Bring on Tomorrow!”

Bristol demonstration keeps focus on guns

BRISTOL — The day after 17 people were shot to death at a Parkland, Fla., school, last month as Fair Haven police investigated a Poultney teen for planning a similar shooting at Fair Haven Union High School, Mount Abraham Union High School conducted a routine fire drill.

“That was scary,” sophomore Emma Campbell later recalled.

Clerk phones in to Bristol town meeting from maternity bed

BRISTOL — Jen Stetson Myers’s baby was due on Saturday, March 3, but as she left work the day before Myers was focused on the Bristol town meeting scheduled for Monday, March 5. She is, after all, the Bristol town clerk and treasurer.

“I didn’t think I would have the baby over the weekend, and I was planning to attend town meeting,” Myers said in an interview last week. “I was already in the mind-set.”

Her baby, apparently, had a different mind-set.

Mt. Abe students battle snow, bureaucracy for gun protest

BRISTOL — Four weeks after 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., were shot to death, students from thousands of schools across the nation got up and walked out of class on Wednesday.

The National School Walkout, as the event was dubbed, was organized to honor the Parkland shooting victims and protest gun violence in America.
