Bristol road foreman Eric Cota_cmyk 1077.jpg

BRISTOL - When Eric Cota started his new job as road foreman of the Bristol Highway Department on Saturday, the weather had plans for him.

Over three days, snow and wintry mixes turned into occasional heavy rain, and were followed by strong winds.

“Thankfully no trees were down in the roads,” he said in an interview.

Then on Monday, in honor of Cota's 28th anniversary with the Highway Department, one of his trucks promptly quit on him.

gun seller Pidgeon_2582.jpg

NEW HAVEN — Licensed firearms dealer David Pidgeon is happy to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

“No dealer wants to sell a firearm to someone who shouldn’t have it,” he said.

But the owner of Pidgeon’s Gun Shop in New Haven doesn’t think the gun-control bills Gov. Scott signed into law last Wednesday are going to make anyone safer.

BRISTOL — “You know you changed my life, right?”

Short and sweet, these words spoken by a recent Mount Abraham Union High School graduate to his Starksboro mentor of 10 years capture the essence of mentoring programs.

The mission of the Mount Abraham Mentoring Program is to invest in, support and encourage healthy relationships between Mount Abe kids and adults. It’s a mission the program’s coordinator, Brenda McKean, feels is growing more important.

RIPTON — When he was writing sections of North Branch School’s student-scripted spring play, “Wildflowers, Guns, and Bears, Oh My!” which will be staged this weekend, ninth-grader Oscar Downing never set out to incorporate current events.

“I mostly just write what would be entertaining to the crowd and also what goes with the story,” he said. “But oftentimes what happens is that we notice a parallel between what’s going on with the play and something political, and we’ll put in a line about it.”

Tariffs and tax incentives have dealt setbacks, but solar in Vermont is doing fine

SolarArray5745.jpg

BRISTOL — Though widely expected, President Trump’s announcement in January that the United States would impose a tariff on imported solar electric cells and modules has set off alarms in Vermont.

The tariff, which the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) called “a loss for America,” is only the latest in what many say is a series of troubling setbacks for Vermont solar, including recent changes in solar power billing rules (called net metering) and a gradual reduction in federal tax incentives.

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on April 2 rejected a petition containing more than 200 signatures that requested a special referendum on the town’s pending license agreement with Vermont Gas.
