Bristol native Willoughby Morse has landed a plum gig.

A 2012 graduate of Mount Abraham Union High School who’s been playing in one band or another since middle school — most recently with the psych-pop band Madaila — Morse is at the moment touring and playing drums with sometime Burlington singer-songwriter Caroline Rose. Rose’s latest album, “Loner,” has put her music in the national spotlight, and now Morse along with her.

Ban the bag? Duo seeks end to plastic bags in Middlebury

Posted on May 7, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

MIDDLEBURY — If they were balled up to the size of tennis balls, the disposable plastic shopping bags used in Middlebury every year would fill up more than three tractor-trailers — maybe even as many as six.

Few of those bags stayed balled up, however, and most of them find their way to landfills.

Middlebury resident Amy McAninch and Middlebury College sophomore Amelia Miller have proposed a solution to this excess waste: a townwide ban on single-use, carry-out plastic bags.

Beef cattle raised on grass in Cornwall

CORNWALL — What does “grass-fed beef” mean?

For Cheryl and Marc Cesario of Meeting Place Pastures in Cornwall, “grass-fed” is more than a label slapped on a package of beef. It’s a way of thinking.

“I don’t see myself as a beef producer. I’m a grass farmer,” Marc said. “I’m in the energy business. The sun shines every day, whether I do anything or not. The question is: How do you harvest the sun?”

soccer kid Nardiello Smith 1.jpg

COLUMBUS, Ohio — By the time he was 16, Bristol native Francis Nardiello Smith had played for four regional and two national soccer teams in the Olympic Development Program.

“They called him ‘The Mayor,’” said Hugh Brown, Nardiello Smith’s coach at Burlington-based Synergy Football Club. “Francis always went out of his way to make sure the other players were doing OK. He made sure they were eating well. He would actually go around and hand out fruit.”

It was the same on the practice field.

Nardiello mother takes leap Bridget.jpg

BRISTOL — Bridget Nardiello is taking a leap she never thought she’d have to take.

After teaching 15 years at Bristol Elementary School, the Bristol resident applied for an unpaid leave of absence so she could be with and support her son, Francis, during his senior year (2018–19) 700 miles away at a high school in Ohio, where he is playing highly competitive soccer. Bristol officials consider natural gas survey

Posted on May 3, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — Bristol residents may soon get a chance to weigh in — officially — on a proposed Vermont Gas project that would bring natural gas service to the town.

On Monday night the Bristol selectboard continued a discussion that had begun at its April 16 meeting, about whether or not it was possible, or desirable, to conduct a survey of town residents to determine their interest in signing up for gas service.

“Nothing was agreed, but it was a good discussion,” said Town Administrator Valerie Capels.

BRISTOL — Hundreds of 5-Town residents will never forget it.

In the fall of 2011, nearly 100 students in bright yellow raincoats electrified the theater at Mount Abraham Union High School. Covered from one end to the other, the unusually wide stage seemed to push the students up through the floor, like flowers.

They were “Singin’ in the Rain,”of course.

BRISTOL — Meridith McFarland, who will take charge of the Bristol Recreation Department May 1, keeps a softball glove in her car at all times.

“I’m always up for a pickup game,” she said in a recent interview.

But 5-town players should beware: She twice competed in the national tournament of the Amateur Softball Association (now USA softball).

Beyond the diamond, McFarland brings a breadth of interest and depth of experience to the rec department.

BRISTOL — Opponents of the natural gas pipeline proposed for Bristol won a partial — albeit temporary — victory at Monday night’s selectboard meeting.

After roughly 90 minutes of intense discussion, during which the selectboard was often put on the defensive, the four members present voted unanimously to table a motion pledging their signatures on a license agreement with Vermont Gas Systems (VGS).
