BRISTOL — Hairstyles have come and gone, but for more than six decades Bristol Beauty Bar has seemed like forever.

Perhaps it’s the avocado green base cabinet Lucille Skeffington has used since November 1957, when she opened the shop in her home at 4 Mountain St. Or perhaps it’s the original wood-paneled walls.

“I just never had to change anything,” she said.

Forever came to an end on Saturday, however, as Skeffington, who is 91 years old, welcomed her final client, Rita Booska, who is 95.

Beeman mud kitchen 5957.jpg

NEW HAVEN — The phrase came up at a staff meeting at Beeman Elementary School in the fall of 2017.

“Mud kitchen.”

Robin Shalline was intrigued.

“It started percolating,” she said. “I thought, What is a mud kitchen? I googled it, looked it up on Pinterest, and I thought, We’ve got to have this.”

In mid-April, thanks to a collaboration among students, parents, community members and a local business, Beeman got its own mud kitchen.

Just in time for mud season.

LINCOLN — Harriett “Hattie” Brown celebrated her 100th birthday on April 10.

“I’ve been here quite a while,” the Lincoln resident said, smiling, in a recent interview.

After a century of meeting and greeting, Brown knows so many people it would be impossible to throw a reasonable-size birthday party. So her granddaughter, Barbara Rainville, decided to throw her a card shower instead.

ADDISON COUNTY — While some low-lying parts of Addison County and Brandon saw streams and rivers overflow their banks, this area so far has been spared the deluge that steady rain and snowmelt brought to parts of Vermont this past weekend.

With some spring rains forecast for the coming week, weather watchers are asking local residents to be aware of water levels in their neighborhoods.

Middlebury College students are drafting a “joint resolution supporting a State Green New Deal and associated legislative and public policy proposals related to climate change and social justice,” which they hope will get introduced in the General Assembly early next year.

The Green Mountain version of the Green New Deal is every bit as transformative as the federal version introduced Feb. 7 by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.
