NEW HAVEN — Sometimes the miracle of love’s persistence shines most brightly when it emerges from the anguish of a broken heart.

Linda Sweeney’s heart broke last February when her beloved husband, Michael, died unexpectedly. From grief’s dark and timeless depths she struggled to envision a world without him. Day by day, piece by piece — though she at times felt like an “unwilling architect” — she began to rebuild her life.

Along the way she has wrought a miracle.

Organizers add spark to New Year's in Bristol

BestNight-2932.jpg

BRISTOL — Bristol Best Night organizers ordered 400 buttons for this year’s New Year’s Eve event. Then they ordered some more, just in case.

It’s going to be epic.

“This year, especially given the lack of New Year’s Eve activities in Burlington, we decided to increase our focus on the final act, with dancing until 11 p.m. with the Starline Rhythm Boys,” said Best Night organizer Eric Warren.

Input sought on Monkton town office

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

Monkton town bldg open house.jpg

MONKTON — The facts are pretty straightforward: Neither the Monkton town office nor the town’s Russell Memorial Library has a source of potable water. Both buildings are energy hogs. The parking situation stinks.

In theory, the solution to these problems is also pretty straightforward: Build new facilities. In practice, however, things get rather more complicated — Monkton voters have three times defeated building proposals.

Marikate Kelly named to Monkton selectboard

Kelley, Marikate.jpg

MONKTON — After a brief search, the Monkton selectboard appointed longtime resident Marikate Kelley to fill an open seat vacated by Rodger Parker, who resigned from the board last month.

“For now I’m just getting my feet wet,” Kelley said after Monday’s meeting. “This is a great town and a great group of people, and I want to be of service to my community.”

Two official meetings in, she added with a grin, “I haven’t changed my mind about that.”

FitzGerald Mt Abe facilities_cmyk 4053.jpg

BRISTOL — When Joel FitzGerald accepted the job as facilities director of the Mount Abraham Unified School District, he knew what he was getting into. His brother has lived in the 5-Towns for more than 35 years and the second generation of FitzGeralds is about to enter its school district. In addition to making sure students are safe, warm and undistracted by their environment every day, FitzGerald would have to manage a rapidly deteriorating high school in a district where voters have three times rejected bonds to renovate it.

MIDDLEBURY — On June 23, 2014, while Middlebury College professor James Chase Sanchez was writing about protest and sacrifice for his PhD, a white man in his hometown of Grand Saline, Texas, set himself on fire to protest that town’s racism.

Though Sanchez was more than 100 miles away at the time, the event would forever change his life. Not only did he refocus his entire PhD dissertation at Texas Christian University because of it, but in early 2016 he agreed to produce a documentary film about it.

Bristol puts new recreation center plan on hold

Posted on December 10, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — After months of discussion, the Bristol Recreation Community Steering Committee has voted down a plan to develop a new recreation center on the property at 76 West St., in spite of its desirable location and gateway visibility.

The steering committee was formed in September after the town of Bristol on Aug. 20 signed an agreement (contingent upon voter approval) to purchase the 0.59-acre parcel for $166,500, with an eye toward replacing the existing house with facilities that would consolidate the Recreation Department in one location.
