BRISTOL — More than 20 years ago, when Sheri Bedard Bannister designed a logo for her family’s annual fundraiser, the Three Day Stampede Toward a Cure for Cystic Fibrosis, she had no idea that dozens of people in her community would one day get it tattooed on their bodies.

WEST ADDISON — As the last visitor departed from Saturday’s Breakfast on the Farm event, hosts Steve and Tim Kayhart of Kayhart Brothers Dairy in West Addison were walking on clouds.

“It was great for us, of course, but it was also great for the dairy industry as a whole,” Steve said.

The next day, however, he found himself in a funk.

New Haven home tax rate drops

Posted on July 30, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

NEW HAVEN — The New Haven selectboard on July 10 approved a 22 percent decrease in the municipal tax rate, but because the education property tax rate — a much bigger component of the overall property tax bill — went up, New Haven homeowners will see only a modest decrease in their taxes.

The municipal tax rate was set at 29.02 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The town’s residential education rate for fiscal year 2019 increased by less than 1 percent to $1.5943, and the nonresidential education rate increased by 4 percent to $1.6339.

Experts to evaluate Mt. Abe's ventilation system

By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — A comprehensive assessment of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems at Mount Abraham Union High School could begin producing hard data as early as this fall.

Complaints about poor air quality at the school have provoked a great deal of discussion over the past few years, but proposals for improvement have three times gone down in flames, along with the multi-million-dollar renovation bonds into which they were embedded.

Women take charge in Bristol

BristolBusiness2178.jpg

BRISTOL — Women own or run a heck of a lot of Bristol businesses.

Though there is no definitive list of town business, Ian Albinson, executive director of the Bristol CORE business group, compiled a list of 22 women-owned or women-run businesses virtually off the top of his head.

No one can say just why this is the case and what it means for the town’s future, but people paying attention say that the number of women in the town’s business scene and the vigor they bring to the entrepreneurial ecosystem is undeniable.

Bristol film series to celebrate women directors

MoviesintheBarn5061.jpg

BRISTOL — In the middle of her acceptance speech at the 90th Academy Awards ceremony last March, a giddy, breathless Frances McDormand put her Best Actress Oscar on the floor and asked all the female award nominees to stand with her. Led by actress Meryl Streep, they did, and Hollywood’s Dolby Theater erupted with applause.

The moment was less striking as a gesture of solidarity, however, than as a visual of how literally few and far between those women were — lone figures standing amid vast seas of the seated.

BRISTOL — Just because the Mount Abraham Unified School District’s summer Expanded Learning Program (ELP) will not end with a battery of standardized testing doesn’t mean there’s not a whole lot of learning happening there.

Talks continue on sale of Bristol land

Posted on July 19, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard at its July 9 meeting inched closer to selling 8.61 acres of town land, located off Firehouse Drive, to Stoney Hill Properties LLC.

The land is part of a 30-acre parcel Bristol bought from the state of Vermont for $1 per acre in 1999.

In 2015 the town signed a purchase and sale agreement to convey the land to Stoney Hill for an initial price of $25,000 per acre, with an additional $10,000 per acre to be paid upon completion of the conditions set forth in the agreement.

Lincoln school wall becomes a canvas for artists

LINCOLN — Though the Muses will have plenty of chances over the coming year to descend upon the Lincoln Community School, the art that is now emerging there will require more than inspiration; it will require hundreds of hours of sweat and labor.

That and about 30,000 pieces of tile, glass and stone.
