ADDISON COUNTY — Months of unfavorable weather have put a damper on spring planting around the county.

“It’s pretty miserable,” said Jeff Carter, an agronomy specialist with UVM Extension in Middlebury. “It was a harsh winter, which killed various hay crops, including alfalfa and orchard grass. Now the cool wet spring is causing damage.”

Corn crops have been delayed by three weeks, he said.

“Not 20 percent of them have been planted yet,” he said early this week.

BRISTOL — Over the past 15 years a group of senior women calling themselves the Coffee Mates have become something of a fixture at Almost Home Market in Bristol.

Every Wednesday morning they buy coffee and baked goods, overspread the long table in the back and fill the place with conversation and laughter.

“It is a happy group of mostly senior ladies growing older and up together,” wrote Sylvia Coffin, 86, in her brief history of the group. “We keep it on the lighter side.”

MIDDLEBURY — Graduation weekend at Middlebury College probably generated more than 100,000 photographs. Pegged at the standard rate (a picture is worth a thousand words), that comes to more than 100 million words.

A crude, tall-tale sort of math, to be sure, but it illustrates both the vast acreage of language available to us and the challenge of harvesting meaning from it.

Ricky Zhou undertook that challenge as a freshman at Middlebury, though he might not have known it at the time. On a whim, he signed up for Chinese 101.

BRISTOL — Eight-year-old Ethan Tanych decided to save the oceans from plastic two years ago, when he saw a video in his kindergarten health class.
