Correction: Monkton taxes going down, not up

Posted on September 2, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

ADDISON COUNTY — Property tax bills for Monkton residents will be smaller for fiscal year 2019 — not larger, as erroneously reported in our Aug. 27 edition. Mistakes were made in calculating the effect of the Common Level of Appraisal on tax bills in several towns.

The total property tax rate for residents, $1.5402, will result in a tax decrease of $48.90 per $100,000 of assessed property. Nonresidents, whose total tax rate is $1.5726, will see a less severe increase in their bills than previously reported — $73.10 per $100,000.

BRISTOL — At rest, the blue morpho butterfly folds its wings and displays the dark earth tones of its underside, a camouflage that protects the delicate flying insect from predators.

But when it flies the tiny iridescent scales that cover its wing tops harness the light to produce a shimmery blue color. To witness its takeoff is to witness a kind of transformation.

BRISTOL — Bristol Fitness, that vibrant little gym in the basement of the Old Bristol High School, changed ownership this month and now has a new name: BFIT.

Kim Jacobs, who developed and managed Bristol Fitness for nearly two decades, purchased the business on Aug. 1 from her former employer, Burlington-based EDGE Sports & Fitness.

The walls of BFIT will soon get a new paint job — in lighter colors — but they won’t be sporting televisions any time soon.

MONKTON — Tax rates are down for Monkton residents, but a 4 percent change in the common level of appraisal (CLA) will result in bigger tax bills this year. Nonresidents, whose tax rates went up, will see substantial increases to their bills.

Bryant joins Lincoln selectboard Ellie3.jpg

LINCOLN — The Lincoln selectboard has a new member, effective immediately.

Ellie Bryant was appointed by the selectboard this past Tuesday, Aug. 21, to replace James Needham, who resigned on Aug. 7 for personal reasons. Needham had served on the selectboard since his election as a write-in candidate in 2015.

Bryant’s term will expire in March, at which time she may choose to run for election to a two-year term on the board.

“Ellie is well-qualified, and she’ll be a good fit,” said selectboard chair Bill Finger.

Pesky mice seem to be everywhere; rodent boom raises Lyme fear

AubuchonCat8085.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — It may be the height of summer, but mice and other rodents in Vermont are acting like it’s autumn, or even winter.

Months ahead of schedule they’ve begun to nest in cars, lawnmowers and houses, where they settle into the walls and crank out babies. At night they skitter through the rafters, clickety-click, gnaw on electrical wiring and creep through kitchens, leaving trails of droppings.

And county residents have had enough.

LINCOLN — Jim Brown has built it and they have come.

This summer Lincoln residents and passersby may have noticed a new addition on River Road, a white farm stand shining like a tiny beacon of hope a few steps from the United Church of Lincoln.

There’s no price list, no honor system, no jar for dollar bills. Instead anyone and everyone is encouraged to donate their surplus vegetables or to take what they need. The sign out front reads “Take It or Leave It Farm Stand.”

MIDDLEBURY — As homelessness becomes more visible downtown and more of a concern, Middlebury’s homeless shelter, the Charter House, will open six weeks early this year.

Doug Sinclair, co-executive director of the Charter House Coalition, said that in spite of uncertain funding the shelter on North Pleasant Street would open its doors on Sept. 1 this year rather than operating from mid-October to April as it has in prior years.

BRISTOL — Bristol tax rates are down across the board for the coming year, but what that will mean for individual tax bills will vary according to the results of the town-wide reassessment of property values that was completed this past spring.

The Bristol selectboard at its Aug. 6 meeting set the 2019 fiscal year municipal tax rate at $0.6989, (a decrease of $0.0627, or about 8 percent), and the police district tax rate at $0.3182 (a decrease $0.0453, or about 13 percent).
