Area orchards battled extreme weather; harvest still fruitful

ADDISON COUNTY — The weather, as usual, wrote the complex story of this year’s apple season.

Take, for example, the beloved McIntosh, Vermont’s most popular variety, which accounts for roughly half the state’s annual production.

At a Cornwall orchard, this summer’s drought reduced the size and number of Macs (though not their quality), and a warm spell in September drastically reduced their picking season.

In Ferrisburgh, an early spring deep-freeze damaged the crop pre-blossom.

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard is accepting applications for chief of the Bristol Village Volunteer Fire Department. It’s a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2019.

They’re not expecting to get many applications, though.

One applicant, current Chief Brett LaRose, has held the top spot since 2014 and was the first chief to be appointed by the selectboard when the town updated its personnel policy in 2016.

MIDDLEBURY — A day after the midterm elections, with conversations about voting rights still front and center, civil rights activist DeRay McKesson took the mic at Middlebury College’s Wilson Hall and asked his audience a simple question:

“What can you buy for $300?”

Answers from the capacity crowd included “books,” “a television” and “sports-game tickets.” One student’s answer — “a hamster” — occasioned good-natured laughter throughout the hall.

MIDDLEBURY — The night after civil rights activist DeRay McKesson spoke at Middlebury College, his ideas were very much on people’s minds as nearly 200 gathered downtown to protest President Trump’s firing of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The firing and appointment of administration loyalist Matthew Whitaker was widely seen as a move endangering a Justice Department investigation by independent counsel Robert Mueller into the Trump administration’s connection to Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election.

LEICESTER — “You’re a pain in the butt,” Richard Reed’s boss once told him. “But you’re doing something important.”

Decades (and perhaps a few ruffled feathers) later, Reed still approaches his work with an ever-changing ratio of skepticism and hope, but his persistence has remained constant and the work he does today is just as important as it was when he began:

Reed, who lives in Leicester, advocates for Vermont’s military veterans.

Reed describes his job this way.

BRIDPORT — Rock Dust Local LLC, a Bridport company founded by Tom Vanacore, last week shipped out 80 tons of freshly broken Addison County shale mixed with biochar — enough to cover 40 acres of Champlain Valley farm fields.

Vanacore is betting the dark gray mixture will convert excess phosphorus into mineral form and prevent it from making its way into Vermont streams and ultimately Lake Champlain.

SOUTH LINCOLN — Driving around Vermont in late October has always presented Jim Apgar with some unusual technical challenges. It’s not the truck or the roads or the routes — they’re fine. It’s not the tools of his trade as a contractor.

It’s the 700-pound pumpkin, the one it took a team of helpers to bring home, a Sawzall to carve and a forklift to set in place atop the truck.
