FERRISBURGH — Pack a great big hall with nearly 200 firefighters, give them an hour at the cash bar, feed them and seat them on either side of a long, wide aisle, and chances are that anyone who has to walk down that aisle to collect an award is going to get catcalled, sometimes in ways that can’t be reprinted in newspapers.

Bruni cmyk by Steve James_6946.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — As a teenager in the early 1980s, New York Times op-ed columnist Frank Bruni decided that in college he would live openly as a gay man.

But when he walked into his dorm room at the University of North Carolina for the first time and saw the enormous poster his new roommate had hung on the wall, which said, “Jesus invites you to a banquet in His honor,” Bruni changed his mind.

BRISTOL — The Bristol wastewater treatment system will soon get a thorough going-over.

The selectboard has commissioned a preliminary engineering report on the 25-year-old system, which is too small to accommodate future growth and change in the downtown Bristol Core Area. Upgrading the system could cost more than $600,000, according to a report prepared for the town last year by Green Mountain Engineering.

Lincoln fiber project falls through FRED PIERCE SUNSET 12_07_2018.jpg

LINCOLN — A deal that should have ben a win-win-win for a pair of utilities, their customers and the environment has fallen through.

Waitsfield & Champlain Valley Telecom (WCTV) has withdrawn from an agreement that would have relocated utility lines from a protected woodland to the roadside in Lincoln, buried new fiber optic cable through the forest and preserved scenic views of Mount Abraham. The agreement fell through even after the Lincoln selectboard approved the deal and the Vermont Family Forests Foundation (VFF) offered to pick up some of the tab.

MIDDLEBURY — A proposed ordinance banning single-use plastic bags in Middlebury may soon go before the town’s voters. But first it has to go through the selectboard.

Because of environmental concerns around flimsy plastic bags used mostly in shopping, efforts to ban them have grown in recent years, with residents in two Vermont towns already outlawing them.

Lady with toys on quilt DSC_6318.jpg

NEW HAVEN — Sometimes the miracle of love’s persistence shines most brightly when it emerges from the anguish of a broken heart.

Linda Sweeney’s heart broke last February when her beloved husband, Michael, died unexpectedly. From grief’s dark and timeless depths she struggled to envision a world without him. Day by day, piece by piece — though she at times felt like an “unwilling architect” — she began to rebuild her life.

Along the way she has wrought a miracle.
