MIDDLEBURY — A group of Middlebury College environmental studies students have been trying to square two items in Vermont’s 2016 Comprehensive Energy Plan:

•  The state aims to reduce total energy consumption per capita by 15 percent by 2025, and by more than one-third by 2050.

•  Transportation fuels account for the largest portion of Vermont’s total energy consumption.

Clearly, driving would have to be reduced in order to meet the goals.

Bristol selectboard to sign pact with Vt. Gas

BRISTOL — Natural gas service is coming to Bristol.

After months of intense discussion, the town selectboard on Monday night voted, 3-1, to pledge their signatures on a proposed license agreement with Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) as soon as the remaining contract kinks get worked out.

The decision surprised many of the 50 in attendance at the Holley Hall meeting, who had expected to continue a discussion about a proposed survey — or even a vote by residents — that would gauge town interest in signing up for natural gas service.

Ban the bag? Duo seeks end to plastic bags in Middlebury

Posted on May 7, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

MIDDLEBURY — If they were balled up to the size of tennis balls, the disposable plastic shopping bags used in Middlebury every year would fill up more than three tractor-trailers — maybe even as many as six.

Few of those bags stayed balled up, however, and most of them find their way to landfills.

Middlebury resident Amy McAninch and Middlebury College sophomore Amelia Miller have proposed a solution to this excess waste: a townwide ban on single-use, carry-out plastic bags.

CORNWALL — What does “grass-fed beef” mean?

For Cheryl and Marc Cesario of Meeting Place Pastures in Cornwall, “grass-fed” is more than a label slapped on a package of beef. It’s a way of thinking.

“I don’t see myself as a beef producer. I’m a grass farmer,” Marc said. “I’m in the energy business. The sun shines every day, whether I do anything or not. The question is: How do you harvest the sun?”

COLUMBUS, Ohio — By the time he was 16, Bristol native Francis Nardiello Smith had played for four regional and two national soccer teams in the Olympic Development Program.

It was the same on the practice field.
