Editorial: Gas and the public good

Posted on May 20, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

The Middlebury Select Board made as eloquent and rational an argument for supporting the Vermont Gas pipeline to Middlebury as can be made. The statement, which was published as a letter accompanying a front-page news story in last Thursday’s Addison Independent, is considerate of others’ perspectives, well-reasoned on all points, and defends what it sees as the best path at this time for the town and residents of Middlebury.

Editorial: Bickering in the Legislature grabbed headlines, but a lot of good prevailed

Posted on May 16, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

While the legislative session was dominated by a gnashing of teeth over cuts to the $1.3 billion General Fund budget and proposed tax increases, creating a clash between the Democrat-Progressive controlled Legislature and Democrat Gov. Peter Shumlin, it was also a session that produced several significant advances — including several social-cultural milestones and ended with a balanced budget without tax increases on income or sales.

Editorial: The making of political cynics

Posted on May 13, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

The cynic among us would note that the biggest danger of the Legislature not adjourning this past weekend is how much damage it can do in two more days.

A kinder analysis would note that because many budget issues were still unresolved, and the tax bill still incomplete, any late night heroics to finish by Saturday would have also been prone to error.

Two votes facing Vergennes residents next Tuesday — a $1.45 million bond to fund a new police station, and a $600,000 loan to replace the high school roof — deserve community support.

Editorial: Legislature shouldn't let groundwork lay fallow

Posted on May 9, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Despite a legislative session that seemed geared to raise several broad-based taxes, news this week suggests that Gov. Peter Shumlin will get what he wanted: the appearance of holding the line on taxes in the face of a lot of red-ink at the start of the session. The somewhat unexpected turnaround this week was helped by better than expected tax receipts for the month of April (and a rosier than expected forecast for the rest of the year), and a proposed federal tax on internet sales that, if passed, could yield $15 million to $20 million for the state annually.

Editorial: An individual choice the state should not prevent

Posted on May 6, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

We’re proud of the Vermont Legislature for moving the death with dignity legislation out of the House and to conference committee and likely action. In this age of medical miracles in which life can be prolonged far past any natural state, it provides a choice for some patients to suffer less and die on their own terms.

It strikes particularly near to my family at this particular time as my father, 88, lost a brief bout with cancer. He died a week ago Wednesday.

Editorial: Vermont could be a leader on hemp

Posted on May 6, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Is the most recent move to legalize hemp cultivation in Vermont a step in the right direction or foolhardy? That’s the question on the minds of some legislators and citizens throughout the state as it comes before the full Legislature this week.

Editorial: Let's work together to draw ski tourists to the area

Posted on May 6, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

A week ago in Monday’s Addison Independent, we ran a story touting the possibility of the greater-Middlebury area becoming a ski destination for Nordic skiers. The newly implemented snow-making system at the Rikert Ski Touring Center is what has prompted the consideration and has some within the community talking about ways to capitalize on the $1.5 million in improvements that Rikert has seen in the past couple of years.

MIDDLEBURY — More than 900 runners have signed up to run the sixth annual Middlebury Maple Run this coming Sunday, May 5. Editorial: Great ideas brewing in Middlebury

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

If Middlebury is to grow jobs close to home by attracting new businesses and industry and cultivating telecommuters, as the Better Middlebury Partnership has done in recent months, then the greater-Middlebury community also has to provide a way for the young professionals who are likely to fill these jobs to easily and effectively assimilate into the community.

The rejuvenation of a “young professionals” group is one answer that’s under way.
