Panton finds answer for town cupola

PANTON — Panton Town Hall’s cupola will soon be removed to allow badly needed new roofing to be installed on the historic building, but a major donation has offered more hope that the cupola can be eventually put back in place.

Panton selectmen last Tuesday accepted not only a $35,000 bid from the McKernon Group to remove the cupola and repair the leaky roof on the 1857 structure, but also a $10,000 anonymous gift toward the cupola’s restoration and hoped-for return to its town hall perch.

MIDDLEBURY — The team that keeps finding a way to win did it again on Friday night.

With a minute-and-a-half left in the Division I football quarterfinal at Doc Collins Field, a No. 6 Colchester team that moments before mounted a game-tying 80-yard drive had to punt from its own 23.

On the sidelines, assistant coach Jed Malcolm told the Tiger punt team, including senior defensive end Dylan Lanpher, to be ready.

Lanpher said Malcolm had a hunch.

Baby booms to building lots: Towns talk Census

ADDISON COUNTY — According to 2010 U.S. Census data, Addison County’s population grew by just 2.3 percent in the past decade, from 35,974 to 36,821.

But within that overall modest trend, there were surprising numbers. Leicester  and Monkton boasted the biggest percentage growth and Middlebury had the largest number of new residents. This while Goshen, Hancock, Starksboro and Vergennes all posted noteworthy declines in population.

Mount Abe too much for Otters in first round

Posted on October 27, 2011 |

BRISTOL — The No. 4 Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team fired on all cylinders — except maybe one — on Tuesday and dispatched visiting No. 13 Otter Valley, 4-1.

The 7-4-4 Eagles possessed the ball constantly, passed efficiently and creatively, won most 50-50 balls, parried the 4-11 Otters effectively when they mounted an attack, and earned a 52-3 advantage in shots at goal.

VERGENNES — A Hartford, Conn., technology company that estimates its 2011 sales will total around $58 billion struck a deal in late September to purchase Goodrich Corp., including its Vergennes plant.

United Technologies Corp. (UTC) — which makes jet engines, helicopters, elevators and other aerospace and building components — plans on closing the $16.4 billion purchase, plus $1.9 billion in assumed debt, in mid-2012, said Goodrich spokesman Andrew Martin on Thursday.

Starksboro: U.S. Census numbers appear to be off

Posted on October 24, 2011 |

STARKSBORO — Starksboro selectmen are skeptical about U.S. Census results that show a population drop in their town, and they plan to contact Census officials to question the data.

According to the 2010 Census, Starksboro’s population is 1,787, down 121 from the 2000 number of 1,898.

But according to Town Clerk Cheryl Estey, the town’s voter checklist increased by 257 in the same decade, from 986 to 1,243.

“I was actually flabbergasted when I saw the (Census) numbers,” Estey said.

Eagles nip Middlebury in OT

soccer3078.jpg

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team put the wraps on the Eagles’ best season in years on Friday, but it wasn’t easy.

The Eagles needed overtime to defeat stubborn visiting Middlebury, 1-0, on a long-range bomb by junior Evy Jacobs; finish their regular season at 9-3-2; and, critically, nail down the No. 4 seed for the Division II playoffs — a loss would have dropped them to No. 5.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School’s 1-0 upset loss to Champlain Valley on Monday will not cost the Tigers a top-four seed in the Division I playoffs, but it might well mean a road trip for a semifinal game depending on the rest of this week’s results.

The teams that will be the Nos. 5 through 7 seeds in some order — Colchester, Mount Anthony and Hartford — cannot amass enough points in the last week of games to crack the top four in the D-I standings.

Clippings: Speech is protected, but jobs aren't

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Are you ready for some free speech?

Well, within limits. I would like to keep my job, be it ever so humble and modestly paid.

Well, I could just about stop there, and that would sum up the kerfuffle earlier this month about ESPN’s decision to remove Hank Williams Jr. and his trademark “Are you ready for some football?” opening from its Monday Night Football program.
