PANTON — A case involving Panton and the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm made its first appearance in Environmental court on May 24.

The Panton Development Review Board in February voted to pursue a case against the farm because one of its feed bunkers was built in the town’s Jersey Street right-of-way. Selectmen later voted to back the DRB in the case.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen met on Monday evening with other officials and members of the town’s historical society to begin talking about the future of the town-owned Union Meeting Hall, which sits on Route 7 at its intersection with Middlebrook Road.

The building is showing its age, and selectmen are wrestling with the cost of maintaining it, which is not covered by the rent paid by a church that uses it for weekly worship and other meetings.

In the past few years, the Vermont Principals’ Association and coaches’ associations in several sports have tinkered with divisional alignments.

It’s never an easy task.

Opinions vary. Mine has changed over the years; I used to be in favor of fewer divisions and “true” state championships. Now, I am more interested in competitive balance within the divisions.

MIDDLEBURY — In a well-played duel for first place in Division II, the only mistakes on Tuesday cost the visiting Mount Abraham Union High School softball team and allowed Middlebury to claim a 1-0 victory.

The 10-5 Tigers took over the top spot in D-II, although 11-3 Lyndon is lurking in second and has an easier schedule. MUHS ends its season on Thursday at D-I power Essex.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School team found itself on both sides of error-fueled rallies late last week, when they stunned host Middlebury on Thursday with three runs in the sixth, 3-2, but lost a late one-run lead to visiting Mount Mansfield on Saturday in a 5-3 setback.

The split of those two games, plus a win at Burlington earlier last week, left VUHS at 5-8. That win total represents the program’s high-water mark in more than a decade.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen will meet with other town officials and citizens on Monday night to discuss the future of the town-owned Union Meeting Hall, which sits on the east side of Route 7 across from the former town clerk’s office.

Selectmen are concerned with the condition of the historic building and the increasing cost of maintaining it. The building is now rented for a modest fee to a church, but officials said the income is not enough to pay for building upkeep in the long term.

MIDDLEBURY — Monday’s 11-10 overtime loss to visiting Mount Anthony probably means the Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team must settle for the No. 2 seed in the Division I tournament behind the No. 1 Patriots.

If the 9-2 Tigers hold serve the rest of the way, as they did by defeating Champlain Valley at home on Tuesday, 14-13, they will earn home field for the playoffs through the postseason until a potential title-game rematch with MAU (10-1).

VERGENNES — In an annual goal-setting session at last week’s Vergennes city council meeting, Alderman David Austin suggested that the city look to form an economic development committee that could work to improve the area’s business climate and offer support and information to potential new ventures.

“I think we really need a local economic development committee,” said Austin, a Main Street business and property owner. “I continue to believe there is economic opportunity here in Vergennes.”
