BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School administrators did not have to look far and wide for a new program head when boys’ soccer coach Mike Corey stepped down last winter after leading the program since 1995.

New varsity coach Bob Russell, a Mount Abe middle school social studies teacher, was not a surprising choice: He had coached the Eagle boys’ junior varsity team for several years, and before then the 8th-grade boys for several more.

VERGENNES — When Addison Northwest School District students return to school this Wednesday they might not see dramatic changes, but district officials believe work this summer, funded by the $7.63 million bond voters approved in March, will make them safer and more comfortable in their schools.

Certainly, said ANWSD Superintendent Sheila Soule, the project came in on budget and on time: The district is ready to welcome its students.

“Everything went as planned, and we’re fully prepared to have our kids back,” Soule said.

VERGENNES — While the Addison County Solid Waste Management District works toward a long-term replacement for the Vergennes recycling center, selectboards of three of the other towns that it serves have agreed to pay higher costs to keep the center open until the end of the year.

The fourth, Waltham, is set to take up the question this Monday, Aug. 13, and Selectboard Chairman Michael Grace said his recommendation to the board “probably will be to stay with Vergennes at this time,” given the lack of other options.

NEW HAVEN — Thousands of fans flocked on Wednesday and Thursday night to see cars, trucks and minivans collide, auto parts fly, and smoke and steam billow from crushed radiators and bashed engine blocks, all while listening to the deafening din of un-muffled motors and pretzeled metal.

Yes, it was time for two nights of the No. 1 Auto Parts Demo Derby at Addison County Fair & Field Days, which draws more spectators than any single event at the fair, possibly to live out their fantasies of road rage.

FERRISBURGH — Residents’ complaints about a dangerous intersection and speeding honey wagons on Tuesday prompted the Ferrisburgh selectboard to act in one case and promise to take action in the other.

The action on the dangerous intersection could potentially have a wider effect. Residents who live on Hollow, Stage and Long Point roads pressed the board to lobby the Agency of Transportation and the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) for a traffic light on Route 7.

Farmers cut more trees in town right of way

FERRISBURGH — After the Vorsteveld Farm recently paid a contractor to cut more trees in the town right of way along Arnold Bay Road, an issue about which the farm and Ferrisburgh officials are already involved in a legal dispute, the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday promised upset neighbors it would take legal action.

After neighbors — and Selectboard Chairman Rick Ebel — said they were frustrated with the farmers’ actions, the board met with town attorney Jim Carroll behind closed doors for 20 minutes.
