VERGENNES — The Vergennes-Panton Water District Board again on Tuesday declined to accept Vergennes resident and Alderman Randy Ouellette’s petition calling for a second vote on the board’s $5.1 million plan for a major upgrade to its lakefront water plant.

On Aug. 4, Vergennes and Panton residents voted, 104-49, in 8 percent turnout, to approve a bond in that amount to fund what would be essentially a complete overhaul of the district’s 37-year-old plant on Lake Champlain, the first major project since its construction.

BRISTOL — On Tuesday at Mount Abraham, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team spotted the host Eagles an early goal, but dominated the rest of the first half, scoring three unanswered goals on the way to a rare win in the county rivalry, 4-2.

The Tigers — who fielded their full lineup for the first time since their opening game, moved to 3-2-1. The Eagles — who were shorthanded because of two-week disciplinary suspensions to one starter and two substitutes — dropped to 2-2-1.

MIDDLEBURY — In an emotional ceremony before Friday night’s Middlebury Union High School football game, longtime Tiger radio announcer and former American Legion Post 27 Commander Dick Bullock was honored by the dedication of the 2010 Tiger football game program to him.

Bullock, who is terminally ill with cancer, announced the beginning of the Tigers’ win over Mount Mansfield, and hopes to announce as much of the Tigers’ home schedule as possible on WVTK-FM 92.1, including this Friday evening’s game vs. Brattleboro.

MIDDLEBURY — With about 0:30 left in Friday’s key Division II football game vs. visiting Mount Mansfield, the Middlebury Union High School coaches were hoping for a blocked punt, a long return, or, failing those options, a big play from an offense that had found the going tough for most of the evening.

More likely, they were starting to think about play-calling for the overtime that loomed large: With the Cougars lining up to punt from their own 28, the score stood at 12-12.

Water vote petition is rejected

VERGENNES — Randy Ouellette, a Vergennes alderman acting as a private citizen, believed on Aug. 31 that he had successfully petitioned for reconsideration of the Aug. 4 vote that backed a $5.1 million bond to pay for Vergennes-Panton Water District plant renovations.

But Ouellette this week learned that his petition had fallen into what one official in the Vermont Secretary of State’s office called “a gray area where municipal attorneys could disagree.” On Monday, he received a letter from the water district board informing him his petition lacked enough signatures to force a revote.

Ferrisburgh puts land on market

FERRISBURGH — The town of Ferrisburgh has placed on the market the 35-acre parcel it owns at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A, just outside Vergennes, with an asking price of $375,000.

The price might have been higher for an open site with permitted wastewater capacity, level topography, high traffic volume, easy access to rail transportation and frontage on two of the state’s busiest highways.

But despite those pluses the land, zoned industrial with retail uses conditionally permitted, does come with some baggage for potential buyers.

FERRISBURGH — In the wake of a new Environmental Court ruling, the Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment will almost certainly handle this fall an amended Champlain Oil Co. (COCO) application for a Route 7 gas station, convenience store and fast-food restaurant.

On Sept. 8, Environmental Court Judge Thomas Durkin made a site visit and then issued a decision that COCO, a South Burlington firm that operates a string of similar facilities, must go back to the ZBA with its proposal to increase the acreage in its application.

The Middlebury Union High School football team will play its home opener against Mount Mansfield on Friday night, but the 2-0 Tigers will also close an era.

It’s no secret that longtime announcer Dick Bullock is seriously ill with cancer, to the point he has a checklist of things he would like to accomplish before he checks out.

Bullock has done play-by-play or color work for Tiger football for 33 years in all, many with former partner Ziggy Livingston before Ziggy reached the end zone a few years back.
