Sports column by Andy Kirkaldy: 2013 proved to be a remarkable year for teams

By Andy Kirkaldy

This past July I typed out a column picking the top 15 high school teams I’d seen in my nearly two decades of covering sports here at the word factory.

It didn’t take long for that list to become dated. As a fellow pickup basketball player pointed out this fall after the undefeated Middlebury Union football team steamrolled its way to the Division I title, it’s already time for a do-over.

County's final deer kill decreases as muzzleloader and bow counts drop

Posted on December 24, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — Relatively low numbers for fall and December archery and muzzleloader deer seasons left the overall 2013 Addison County hunting success rate short of that in most recent years.

The total number of deer weighed at the county’s nine weigh stations ended at 807, down by almost 8 percent from last year’s total of 875.

The breakdown for this year was:

•  Bow season: 132.

•  Youth Hunting Weekend: 109.

•  Rifle season: 421.

Addison weighs zoning updates vs. new town plan

Posted on December 24, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Members of the Addison planning commission and selectboard reached at least a tentative consensus last week that planners should turn their attention away from updating zoning regulations and toward updating the town plan before it expires late next summer.

Planning commission chairman Frank Galgano said and selectboard chairman Jeff Kauffman confirmed that the members of the two boards at a Dec. 16 planning meeting also agreed that the Addison Development Review Board should in the meantime rely on the town’s 2007 zoning laws.

MUHS wrestlers fare well in N.Y. tourney

Posted on December 24, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

PERU, N.Y. — The Middlebury Union High School wrestling team had what Coach Ethan Raymond called a “very successful” Saturday at a tournament hosted by Peru (N.Y.) High School, winning two weight classes and taking seventh out of 16 teams, the second best showing for a Vermont team competing.

Winning their weight classes were senior Jake Trautwein at 182 pounds and junior Chris Gobbi at 220.

Trautwein improved to 5-0 and defeated Kyle Record of Bellows Falls in the final by a second-period pin in what was a key victory over an instate rival.

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Council members and planning commission chairman Shannon Haggett at this past Tuesday’s council meeting discussed the city’s recent award by Vermont Council on Rural Development of free facilitation for a four-month public-forum process that will be offered either next spring or fall. VERGENNES — The new-look Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team on Saturday earned its first win of this season, 53-42, over visiting Montpelier.

After graduating 11 seniors from the 2013 Division II champs, the 1-2 Commodores had already absorbed two more losses than that 24-0 team, and even the usual strong fan support in their gym looked lacking.

BRISTOL — Bristol resident and former Marine John Shepard had always hoped to take his daughter Natasha, 13, to visit the North Carolina coast, the territory he loved when he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1980s.

According to Shepard’s ex-wife and still good friend Marion Martin, a Mineville, N.Y., resident, John and Natasha planned to go this coming November.

But that was before Shepard’s health took a dramatic turn for the worse.

“He won’t make it. He’s fading fast every day,” Martin said.

Vergennes Partnership to get city funding early

Posted on December 19, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday agreed to an early release of $2,500 in city funding for the Vergennes Partnership, the private organization charged with overseeing the health of the city’s downtown.

The partnership’s continued existence is required by state officials if the city center is to remain an official Vermont Designated Downtown. That status allows the city and downtown property owners to apply for state and federal grants to make improvements to infrastructure and their buildings.

BRANDON — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team opened its defense of the Division II title by rallying past stubborn host Otter Valley on Tuesday, 42-31.

The Otters used their quickness and hard work on man-to-man defense to frustrate the Eagles in the first half, which ended with the host team up, 17-14, behind a trio of three-pointers from senior Jessica Frazier.
