Tiger girls' lacrosse tangles with Mt. Anthony for D-1 crown

BURLINGTON — The battle of the unbeatens went to the Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team on Monday at the University of Vermont’s Virtue Field.

But it wasn’t easy, as the 18-0, top-seeded Tigers had to outscore No. 2 Mount Anthony down the stretch and hold the high-powered 17-1 Patriot offense in check to pull out a 10-8 victory.

Country Home Products to close Winooski plant

VERGENNES — Vergennes outdoor power equipment firm Country Home Products and its parent company, Generac Holdings Inc. of Wisconsin, have decided to close CHP’s Winooski manufacturing plant, according to a statement released on Friday morning by Gov. Phil Scott.

Repeated efforts on Friday to reach CHP or Generac officials for comment were unsuccessful. CHP is the second-largest private employer in Vergennes, trailing only United Technologies Corp. on Panton Road.

Eagle softball downs Randolph, makes history with state championship title

POULTNEY — In the gathering twilight on Friday, the members of the Mount Abraham Union High School softball team shouted joyously in front the scoreboard at the Poultney Recreation Field: “We made history.”

That scoreboard read: Home: 4 — Guest: 2.

Tiger girls' lax will face Mt. Anthony in Monday state championship

MIDDLEBURY — The top-seeded Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team on Wednesday used balanced scoring and strong defense and goaltending to defeat No. 4 Rice, 13-3, in a Division I semifinal.

As expected, the 17-0 Tigers will meet 17-0 Mount Anthony, the second seed, in the D-I final. The Patriots in Wednesday’s other semifinal dismissed No. 6 seed Champlain Valley, 18-12.

OV baseball tops Fairfax, state final is Monday night

FAIRFAX — The third-seeded Otter Valley Union High School baseball team on Wednesday defeated No. 2 Fairfax, 2-0, in dramatic fashion in a Division II semifinal, and will play No. 4 U-32 for the title. The Otters will be seeking their first title since 2013.

The D-II final has been set for University of Vermont’s Centennial Field at 7 p.m. on Monday.

OV (13-6) and U-32 (13-5), which knocked off top-seeded Lamoille on Wednesday, 5-2, did not face each other this spring.

Eagle softball rallies past Slaters in D-II semifinal

BRISTOL — In a back-and-forth Division II high school softball semifinal on Wednesday, host No. 1 Mount Abraham struck the decisive blows to survive No. 4 Fair Haven’s comeback, 8-5.

The Eagles improved to 13-5 heading into Friday’s final, and the Slaters finished at 12-6.

On Wednesday the Slaters scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead in a rally that started with two outs and the bases empty. After a walk to No. 9 hitter Sydney Bennett, Fair Haven scored the first run on a bunt single by JoHanna Morse and an Eagle throwing error.

Farmers removing Arnold Bay Road stumps; Ferrisburgh still talking to attorney

FERRISBURGH — Farmers Hans and Gerard Vorsteveld told the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday they have started removing stumps from along Arnold Bay Road, but that poor weather has slowed their efforts to clean up. In early April they cut down about 2,000 trees and shrubs, illegally according to Ferrisburgh officials because they were in the town right of way.

Tri-Town voters OK $1.5 million water storage tank

SHOREHAM — Residents of Shoreham, Addison and Bridport in low turnout on May 23 voted in favor of by a huge margin a $1.5 million Tri-Town Water District proposal for a new 760,000-gallon storage tank on Douglas Orchard land in Shoreham.

Although only 155 residents cast ballots, public sentiment was clear: 143 residents favored the new tank, 10 opposed it, and two ballots were deemed to be spoiled.

Pitts shines as three Eagles win gold at state track and field championships; Tigers, Commodores also score well

EAST MONTPELIER — Mount Abraham Union High School junior Lydia Pitts added to her trophy case by winning the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump to highlight local athletes’ efforts at Saturday’s Division II state track and field championship meet at U-32 High School.

Also winning events were Eagle senior Finn Clements, who upset favored Jalen Carter of U-32 in the boys’ javelin, and Eagle junior Emma Radler, who outclassed the field in the girls’ pole vault.
