Andy Kirkaldy: Yes, that U.S. Open umpire was out of line

Kirkaldy, Andy ONLINE.jpg

Wow, that Naomi Osaka is some tennis player, huh? Strong with good court coverage, great groundstrokes, booming serves, and what a lot of poise under pressure against Madison Keys in the U.S. Open semifinal last week and then Serena Williams in Saturday’s final.

What a bright future. If she ever learns to take advantage of her height and quickness to develop a net game, Osaka could be the next great women’s tennis player, if she isn’t already.

And yet, sadly, that’s not what anybody is talking about. Thanks for nothing, Carlos Ramos.

New stop light eyed for Route 7 in North Ferrisburgh

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh officials came away optimistic from an Aug. 29 meeting that the Vermont Agency of Transportation would take a serious look at a request from the town — and particularly North Ferrisburgh residents — for traffic signals at the intersection of Route 7 with Old Hollow and Stage Roads.

Selectboard members and residents alike agree that intersection, just south of Ferrisburgh’s border with Charlotte, is dangerous.

Vergennes police to get SUV, not body cameras

Posted on September 10, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department will be getting a new Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) enforcement SUV, but that purchase will come at the expense of delaying the purchase of body cameras for each of the department’s eight full- or part-time officers.

That delay is the result of an Aug. 28 Vergennes City Council decision to adjust the police budget to allow the purchase of the CMV at a cost higher than expected when the council budgeted for one new police vehicle in June.

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury Union High School football team coming off a disappointing opening loss just might have made a statement in its second game.

The Tigers will be reckoned with this fall.

On Friday the Tigers toppled Hartford, 27-14. And Hartford, a Division I finalist a year ago, had opened by winning at defending champion St. Johnsbury the week before.

Junior quarterback Tim Goettelmann, who ran 16 times for 108 yards and scored three touchdowns, explained what the win meant to the Tigers.

VERGENNES — Tuesday’s girls’ soccer game at Vergennes Union High School pitted visiting Middlebury, a team that graduated nine valuable seniors and now features a half-dozen freshmen, against the Commodores, who returned two all-stars to their lineup after they missed most or all of the 2017 season.

And on Tuesday those all-stars, senior striker Ciara McClay and junior center midfielder Emily Rooney, combined for five goals and an assist in their team’s 5-0 victory over a Tiger team that is understandably still seeking its identity.
