BRANDON — Saturday’s competitive high school boys’ basketball game in Brandon between host Otter Valley and Mount Abraham took a sharp turn at 4:28 of the third quarter.

That’s when after watching Eagle senior guard Logan Willey convert a steal to tie the game at 29-29, OV Coach Greg Hughes called for time. That hoop erased the last of what had been OV’s nine-point second-quarter lead.

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Tuesday afternoon investigated a report of a student threat to fire a weapon at Vergennes Union High School, but according to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel authorities determined “the ability to carry out the threat was not real,” and “no threat exists to the safety of students or the facility.”

On Wednesday Merkel said a VUHS student told police that another student made the threat during a conversation, and that report triggered the investigation.

Corporate moves won't affect Vergennes aerospace plant

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Despite recent major changes in the corporate structure of one of Addison County’s largest employers, a company spokesman said this week it should be business as usual on Panton Road in Vergennes.

What in 2012 was a Goodrich Aerospace plant — and until late last year did business under the banner of United Technologies Aerospace Systems — now has a Collins Aerospace sign facing Panton Road after parent company United Technologies Corp. completed a multi-billion-dollar acquisition.

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team hung with host Vergennes for a quarter and a half on Tuesday, but the Commodores used their size and experience to steadily pull away for a 47-19 victory.

Tiger freshman Ivy Doran scored five unanswered points early in the second quarter, a stretch in which the MUHS pressure defense also was frustrating the Commodores, who turned the ball over 14 times in the first half.

FERRISBURGH — A public meeting next Tuesday could determine if the Vermont Agency of Transportation eventually makes improvements to the North Ferrisburgh intersection of Route 7 with Old Hollow and Stage roads — and whether those improvements are a full set of traffic lights, a roundabout, or more modest changes.

That Jan. 15 meeting at 6:30 p.m. in Ferrisburgh’s town office building will include a preliminary presentation from VTrans on those options and their cost, effect on safety and impact on the area, as well as crash data and traffic counts.

If the Vermont Green Line, or VGL, is built through northwestern Addison County, millions of dollars could flow into New Haven and Ferrisburgh in compensation for use of town road rights-of-way and in higher tax revenue through new taxable infrastructure.
