Shelter work still ongoing during rehab

VERGENNES — Despite the ongoing renovation of the John Graham Homeless Shelter’s main building on Monkton Road in Vergennes, shelter officials have continued to fulfill the organization’s mission of finding housing for the homeless — even though demand is higher than usual, said Shelter Executive Director Elizabeth Ready.

Ready said plans had first called for the 10-bedroom Monkton Road building to stay open during the $627,000 project, which is expected to be finished in early September.

Veterans deliver at demo derby

NEW HAVEN — The usual huge crowds last week flocked to both nights of what is arguably Addison County Fair and Field Days’ single biggest attraction, the No. 1 Auto Parts Demolition Derby, during which veteran driver Tim Whitney won three of 11 heats and Boomer LaFountain celebrated 20 years of crunching collisions with a Thursday win.

Unlike in past years, no end-of-the-evening main feature winners were crowned. Drivers said they had mixed feelings about the format change.

City rail depot may move at last

VERGENNES — The long-planned move of the roughly 160-year-old former Vergennes railroad station to the Ferrisburgh commuter lot erected by the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) may finally happen this fall.

According to recent VTrans emails, some provided by City Manager Mel Hawley, VTrans and Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) officials are putting finishing touches on plans on which contractors could submit bids.

Champs, Panthers claim state titles

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Vergennes Champ and Middlebury Panther swimmers combined to claim three titles at the Vermont Swim Association meet held this past Saturday and Sunday at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction.

Longtime MUHS coach asked to re-apply for post

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse coach Jono Chapin’s teams have compiled a 231-100 record during his 20-year tenure.

Since 1992, his Tiger teams have won seven Division I state championships, and the boys’ lacrosse team plays on a facility, Fucile Field, built largely because of tireless fund-raising by Chapin and a handful of other local citizens.

Heffernan charged with attempted murder in shooting

BURLINGTON — The Chittenden County state’s attorney charged Dean T. Heffernan, 27, of Bristol with attempted murder, first degree, at a Thursday morning arraignment at the criminal division of Chittenden County Superior Court.

Heffernan pleaded innocent to a charge that carries a penalty ranging according to court documents from "a presumptive minimum term of 35 years" to life in prison.

Champ, Panthers earn league titles

ESSEX — Vergennes Champ and Middlebury Panther swimmers combined to win five Champlain Valley Swim League titles at this past weekend’s championship meet, which was held this past Friday and Saturday at the Essex town pool.

Grace LeBeau, 8, of Vergennes won two races; sisters Reubie and Annie Bolton of Middlebury, 13 and 10, respectively, won one event apiece; and Kess Moulton, 12, of Middlebury, also won one race.

Waltham homeowners see taxes fall, non-residents' taxes rising

WALTHAM — Waltham selectmen on Monday pegged the town’s municipal tax rate at 40 cents, a 2-cent hike in the rate to Waltham taxpayers for funding town road and office expenses.

Combined with Waltham’s drop in its residential rate for school taxes — by 14.94 cents to $1.2935 — town homeowners will be looking at lower tax bills over the next year.

MIDDLEBURY — One Middlebury institution’s trash may prove to be another facility’s treasure.

Actually, trash is probably too strong a word for the decade-old artificial turf of Middlebury College’s Kohn Field, home of the successful Panther field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams.

Panton board sets taxes, town meeting on cupola

PANTON — Panton selectmen at a Thursday special meeting adopted a 2011-2012 tax rate and set a Sept. 7 special meeting at which residents can decide the fate of Panton Town Hall’s leaky cupola.

The town’s new municipal tax rate is 64.51 cents, an increase of almost 12 cents from the 2010-11 rate of 52.70.
