Sports Column by Andy Kirkaldy: Panthers, locals excel at exciting sport with sticks

It’s funny, field hockey has a reputation as a sport that is constantly being interrupted by whistles.

I thought of that on Sunday afternoon while I sat in front of my computer and watched the Middlebury College team battle Bowdoin for the NCAA Division III title and win, 1-0.

Many more were probably glued to televisions watching a sport in which every play begins and ends with a whistle, and the athletes have to gather for a committee meeting before they decide what to do next. Yes, that would be football.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard will consider during its upcoming budget talks whether to propose spending up to $25,000 a year for 10 hours a week of service from the Vergennes Police Department, board members said at their Nov. 17 meeting.

Board members said they would make the decision to include that or a lesser amount in the 2016-2017 municipal budget after hearing from Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley and Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel about what city police could offer Ferrisburgh.

ADDISON COUNTY — No banners will be raised by local girls’ high school soccer teams after this fall, but three local squads hosted and won playoff games, including Otter Valley for the first time in program history.

Although the Otters also enjoyed their first-ever winning season and are well-represented on the 2015 Addison Independent Girls’ Soccer All-Star Team, the Independent Co-Player of the Year suited up elsewhere: Mount Abraham junior Ernesta McIntosh.

Young hunters bag big bucks during Youth Deer Hunting Weekend

ADDISON COUNTY — Seventy-five young hunters were successful locally during Youth Hunting Weekend and brought a deer to be weighed at one of Addison County’s weigh stations.

Although that total kill on Nov. 7 and 8 was the lowest in the county since the Department of Fish and Wildlife established the two-day weekend reserved for youth hunting, local hunters brought down several trophy animals, and generally the size and health of the deer killed were good, weigh station operators said.

ADDISON COUNTY — The 2015 deer rifle season got off to a promising start in Addison County on Nov. 14 and 15, with the numbers coming in at the third-best opening-weekend total since 2010 and hunters taking down many trophy animals.

In all, the county’s nine official weigh stations handled 188 bucks, just 12 fewer than the highest opening weekend total of the past six years, 200 in 2013, and four fewer than 2010’s two-day total of 192.

MIDDLEBURY — The Ferrisburgh resident who was driving under the influence of alcohol on June 17 when her car struck and killed a Charlotte physician bicycling on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh was on Monday sentenced to a year’s probation and 80 days of community service in the Addison County Superior Court.

Judge Samuel Hoar handed down that sentence, to which was also attached a lengthy list of conditions that included drug and alcohol screening and substance abuse treatment, after Holly Gonyeau, 36, changed her plea from innocent to no contest.

VERGENNES — Addison Superior Court Judge Samuel Hoar Jr. on Nov. 2 dismissed a civil lawsuit filed against Vergennes by an East Street resident that was related to the city’s failed attempt to build a preschool playground near the city’s East Street swimming pool.

That quarter-acre project, originally estimated at $42,000, was to be funded by a $21,000 grant and by another $21,000 from the city’s Water Tower Fund. City officials walked away from the playground proposal when the cost escalated after a year of delays.

VERGENNES — After one final debate on downtown housing regulations, this past Tuesday night, the Vergennes City Council adopted new zoning laws as proposed by the city’s planning commission.

The section in question as approved on Nov. 10 will allow property owners in the Central Business District to install first-floor or basement apartments, but only if the units do not front on streets, cannot be seen from streets, and do not take up more than 20 percent of a building’s footprint.
