Champs, Marlins come home with hardware

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Both the Vergennes Champs and Middlebury Marlins came home with titles from the Vermont Swim Association 2018 Championships, held this past weekend at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction.

The Champs won the Division II championship by finishing first in five individual races and one relay, second in four other relays, and third in a fifth relay race.

Shrine football team wins third straight

CASTLETON — The Vermont team of recent high school graduate all-star football players on Saturday picked up the state’s third win in a row over New Hampshire, 24-13, in the 65th annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, which was played at Castleton University.

Strong defense and running sparked Vermont, which cut New Hampshire’s all-time lead in the series to 47-16-2 in front of 5,229 fans at Spartan Stadium. Proceeds support Shrine hospitals for children.

Real estate market still strong; prices rising in some areas

ADDISON COUNTY — According to data provided by local real estate experts, this summer’s home sales overall in Addison County have remained on par with the solid performance of 2017, while prices have begun to rise and properties are selling faster.

A major factor in the higher prices and quicker sales is tighter supply, experts said: There are fewer homes on the market in 2018 than in 2017, and competition for desirable properties appears to be having an effect.

Friday morning fire claims Ferrisburgh barn; no injuries

FERRISBURGH — An early-morning fire on Friday destroyed a hay barn and its contents at 1535 Monkton Road, a Ferrisburgh farm owned by Allan Brisson.

About 40 firefighters and 14 pieces of equipment from Vergennes, Ferrisburgh, New Haven, Addison and Monkton responded to the 2 a.m. fire, according to Vergennes Fire Chief Jim Breur, speaking from the scene at about 9:15 a.m. on Friday.

Committee chooses city manager finalists

VERGENNES — After a series of video interviews on Tuesday night the committee charged with recommending candidates to be the new Vergennes city manager to the city council has narrowed the field from six semifinalists to three finalists, according to search committee chairman and Deputy Mayor Jeff Fritz.

Fritz said plans call for those three finalists to do another round of video interviews, this time with the entire city council, at a special meeting next week.

Champ, Marlin swimmers score well at league meet

ESSEX — Led by two wins by 10-and-under swimmer Will Clark and one apiece from Allie Croke and Flint Crary in 14-and-under and 8-and-under races, respectively, the Vergennes Champs earned fourth place at this past weekend’s Champlain Valley Swim League meet in the Essex town pool.

Clark, a league and state champion a year ago as an 8-and-under swimmer, prevailed in the 50-yard freestyle and 25-yard backstroke. Croke won the 50-yard butterfly, and Crary finished first in the 25-yard freestyle.

Vergennes eateries Hired Hand and Shuen Lee eyeing expansion

VERGENNES — The owners of two restaurants, one in downtown Vergennes and one just outside the city limits in Ferrisburgh, are making plans to expand, and in one case move, their operations.

The Vergennes Development Review Board on Aug. 20 will hold public hearings on proposals for Hired Hand Brewing Co. to begin taking over School Street space now occupied by the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes and for Shuen Lee Chinese Restaurant to move from the Aubuchon Plaza to 10 Main St., Vergennes, and build a 625-square-foot addition to allow for eat-in dining.

Addison's tax rate rises by 4 percent

ADDISON — Addison’s 2018-2019 property tax rates will increase taxes for homeowners by 4 percent and for owners of commercial and rental property or second homes by about 10.3 percent.

Higher town spending is pushing the municipal portion of the rate up by any noticeable amount for the first time in several years.

'Opportunity' seen for Vergennes

VERGENNES — A new federal program could help the economy in Vergennes, and 16 other communities in Vermont and thousands around the nation, but details are still being worked out and its impact is not yet known.

What is known is that this spring the Vergennes City Council successfully applied through the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development to become a federally recognized “Opportunity Zone.”

Vergennes manager Hawley bid adieu amid praise, laughs, memories

VERGENNES — Just retiring City Manager Mel Hawley’s longevity in his position has been remarkable, said Vergennes Mayor Renny Perry at a Tuesday evening gathering honoring Hawley in the Vergennes Opera House.

 Perry should know. He worked as one of two city managers in Vergennes when Hawley left for 10 years, between 1998 and 2008, to work for Country Home Products, and Perry has also served as a city manager and mayor in New Hampshire.
