VERGENNES — In light turnout on Tuesday, a total of 261 voters from the five Addison Northwest School District communities backed a series of articles, some of which had originally been approved at the ANWSD annual meeting in February.

Items approved included the creation of a district-wide capital improvement fund, the swap of two small parcels of land between the town of Addison and ANWSD, and the right of ANWSD officials to borrow money in anticipation of future tax revenue.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team split two home games earlier this week, falling short of its goal of nailing down a winning regular season.

The results also dampened the Tigers’ chances of moving up from the No. 8 seed in Division I and dodging a quarterfinal matchup with No. 1 defending champion Champlain Valley.

Kirkaldy, Andy ONLINE.jpg

Spring has finally arrived, and many of the local high school teams are making up for earlier games lost to rain, snow and soaked fields with packed schedules. Middlebury girls’ lacrosse, for example, had eight games stuffed in between May 10 and 25, while their Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls’ lax peers had 10 games crammed in between May 8 and 24.

Well, that’s one way to tune up for the playoffs, which will begin next week after the athletes catch their breath over the Memorial Day weekend.

VERGENNES — Vermont Environmental Court has for a second time ruled in favor of the Vergennes Development Review Board and against Mahaiwe LLC, the owner of record of Grist Mill Island, in a dispute over perimeter fencing for the island.

The DRB insisted on a railing fence around the island to protect occupants of additional apartments proposed in 2016 by Mahaiwe, of which Ferrisburgh resident David Shlansky is the principal owner.

FERRISBURGH — While dealing with two thorny legal problems during the current fiscal year the town of Ferrisburgh has overspent two line items devoted to legal fees by almost $18,500 and counting, according to Treasurer Deb Healey on Wednesday.

The Ferrisburgh selectboard has spent $24,102.15 on attorneys, plus a mediation firm, compared to a line item of $8,000, while the town’s zoning board has spent $6,337.90 compared to a budget of $4,000.

Many of the fees have been generated by two ongoing disputes.
