ADDISON COUNTY — In first-round Division II softball playoff action on Tuesday, Middlebury advanced with a home win, but Vergennes and Otter Valley lost on the road.

Mount Abraham also played on Tuesday; see story.

TIGERS

The No. 5 Tigers blanked visiting No. 12 Woodstock, 6-0, as pitcher Payton Buxton tossed a one-hit shutout, her third in the past five games, striking out 12 and walking two. A two-out hit in the seventh spoiled her no-hit bid. She has allowed just two runs in her past five starts.

VERGENNES — It took a journey to two continents for longtime Vergennes Union Elementary School reading specialist and kindergarten teacher Diana Raphael to discover her passion was education.

Raphael, then 21 and just out of Pine Manor College near Boston, traveled to Europe in 1971 for half a year, and from there to Morocco for three months. There she found herself in a village for an extended stay.

City manager warns: Vergennes budget may be a challenge

Posted on June 1, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on May 26 got their first look at a preliminary 2015-2016 general fund budget, and City Manager Mel Hawley said he told council members the adoption process might challenge them this year.

“There’s work to be done,” Hawley said in a phone interview later in the week.

Hawley presented a first budget draft that called for $2,213,085 in spending, an amount that if aldermen adopted it by their June 30 deadline would mean a spending increase of about $125,000, or 6 percent.

FERRISBURGH — When Barbara Bolduc first entered Ferrisburgh Central School she wore a hard hat, and she was 6 years old. That was 61 years ago.

Bolduc had walked over with the rest of Doris Chamberlain’s students from the nearby one-room schoolhouse on Route 7. That school later served Ferrisburgh for decades as its town office, and when the pupils visited Ferrisburgh Central School they were touring a construction site.

MIDDLEBURY — What has been a fine season for the Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis program ended on Friday, when No. 5 seed Essex defeated the No. 4 Tigers, 6-1, in a Division I quarterfinal.

The result could not be called a surprise despite the seeds. The 10-4 Hornets play a tough Metro Conference schedule, while the Tigers compiled their 11-4 record against mostly D-II competition.

Coach Laura Rumbough is considering in the future upgrading her team’s schedule to the Metro, which might mean fewer wins, but better tennis.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team scored the last two goals of Saturday’s back-and-forth battle with visiting Essex, and that gave the Tigers a 12-11 victory and — unofficially — the top seed in Division I for the first time since 2002.

The 13-3 Tigers will begin the quest for the program’s first title since 2003 and eighth overall by hosting a quarterfinal this weekend, possibly against either No. 8 Woodstock or No. 9 Colchester.
