Playoff wrap: Mt. Abe, VUHS girls win; games on tap

ADDISON COUNTY — In first-round high school girls’ soccer playoff action on Wednesday the Mount Abraham and Vergennes girls each won at home, while the Middlebury and Otter Valley girls were eliminated in road contests.

MUHS sweeps; VUHS boys second at NVAC meet

SWANTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys and girls’ cross-country teams swept the Northern Vermont Athletic Conference Small-School Championships, which were hosted by Missisquoi on Saturday.

The Vergennes boys finished a strong second to the Tigers as each team placed three runners in the top 10. Tigers Jack Christner and Thomas Nevins ran 1-2 and Commodore Wade Mullin took fourth.

Noah Engvall led Mount Abraham by taking 25th as the Eagle boys finished eighth.

Ghosts fail to scare Commodore boys' soccer; Spartans next

VERGENNES — The No. 6 Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team controlled almost all of Tuesday’s 5-0 win in a first-round Division III playoff game against visiting No. 11 Randolph, but broke it open when junior midfielder Jeffrey Stearns scored twice in first 3:13 of the second half.

Ferrisburgh offers deal to McGregor

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard last week agreed to make a formal offer to former Sand Road dog rescuer Sheila McGregor that could bring to a close what had been a costly and at times heated legal dispute.

The board adopted a motion that the town would be willing to forego all pending town fines and penalties against McGregor — if she drops her appeals of Ferrisburgh health and zoning board actions filed against her Heidi’s Haven dog rescue operation.

Tiger football thumps CVU; faces Rice in D-I playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team took care of business against visiting 1-7 Champlain Valley on Friday with a 27-7 win. Despite the victory and an upset-filled weekend in Division I, the Tigers did not earn a home playoff game.

The 5-3 Tigers received the No. 5 seed and will play their D-I quarterfinal at 1 p.m. this Saturday at No. 4 Rice, also 5-3 after being upset by Colchester on Friday.

ADDISON COUNTY — This morning’s release of Vermont Principals’ Association high school playoff pairings confirmed that the Mount Abraham field hockey team is the No. 1 seed in Division II, that both Eagle and Vergennes boys and girls’ soccer teams will host first-round games, and the Middlebury boys’ soccer and Otter Valley field hockey squads will also open the postseason on their home fields.

Tiger boys tame T-Birds to nail down No. 5 seed

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team put the wraps on a successful regular season on Saturday by rallying past visiting Missisquoi Valley Union, 2-1, for the Tigers’ seventh straight win.

The 10-3-1 Tigers apparently earned the No. 5 seed in Division I. It looks like they could host Mount Anthony (7-7) on Tuesday at 3 p.m., with No. 3 Essex possibly up next in a quarterfinal. The VPA was set to release pairings early on Monday.

High school field hockey: Eagles, Otters earn key victories

ADDISON COUNTY — As the local high school field hockey regular season concluded last week Mount Abraham and Otter Valley each split two games, efforts good enough to nail down top-four seeds in Division II, while Middlebury dropped a contest.

The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to announce D-II playoff pairings on Monday morning. The Eagles and Otters will host quarterfinals this weekend, while the Tigers could host a first-round game on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Panton town hall cupola, kitchen debated

PANTON — Seven months after residents at a contentious Panton Town Meeting backed spending money to repair and upgrade Panton Town Hall, much new work has been done, including a new handicap access ramp to the main meeting space and new accessible bathrooms to serve that space.  

But two projects residents also backed, a public kitchen in that space and a replacement for the wooden cupola removed seven years ago, remain in limbo.

Mt. Abe soccer girls' streak continues at MUHS

MIDDLEBURY — The surging Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team pitched its third straight shutout on Tuesday, this time at Middlebury in a 4-0 victory.

The Eagles have won three straight to move over .500 at 6-5-2 and into eighth place in Division II in the Vermont Principals’ Association point standings with one game to go.
